Great thing about these cars, is that their suspensions, brakes, and drivelines are up to the additional power to an extent. The clutches must be modified, but it's not a big expense.

A 996 motor rebuild is about 24K done properly, and you will be doing this if you use the car to it's potential with another 200hp. My friends 993 just keeps on taking the abuse, but he has over 60K in just modifications, and that's with him doing the work himself.

Modding any car well costs money. My friends with M3 Turbos using the stage 2.5 kits from www.horsepowerfreaks.com spend over 24K just for the proper kit, and then you have all the other issues with brakes, suspension, etc.

All modded cars are a money pit, but we still seem to do it. At least we aren't sucking a stupid pipe

Very true George!

However, I would have to say that out of the box, a bone stock well maintaned TT will be far ahead in performce than even a heavily modded 951.

Do we have any times for Watkins for a stock TT with a decent driver?

You should drive a stock TT. I run away from them with my current 951. They are great cars, but even my 400whp 2.5 spanked my friends 911TT. It wasn't a track event, but a highway early in the AM with a few other sports car guys doing a Sunday AM drive in the boonies in Southern Arizona. We tried from a stop, rolling from 40 or 50, etc. I even let him get ahead, then easily passed him.

I do like the TT cars, but a modded 951 is a killer sleeper.

You know - getting back to what the OP posted..... you could probably spend 10 to 15k at a shop just fixing all the things you didn't know needed attention on your car

Motor mounts, oil pan seal, rod bearings, rear main, leaking exhaust manifolds, oil block off plate seal, head gasket refresh, engine wiring harness(especially injector connectors), all new rad hose, balance shaft housing rear seals, TT bearings, a-arm ball joints, steering system rebuild and new tie rod ends, turbo with no shaft play, j-boot, brittle vaccum hoses, injector rebuild, wastegate refresh, trans reseal, axles rebuild, wheel bearings all the way around, suspension bushings all the way around, front and rear shock rebuild or replacement etc... Now there is a can of worms

I think in the 400hp rage a 2.5 is still the cheapest .. above 400hp and its a can of worms and it does seem like the V8 is cheaper

I appreciate the offers, but the car I purchased has been on my want list since my cousin bought it new in '86. I never thought he'd sell it, but he agreed that the car needs a new enthusiastic owner. I have no problem with doing all the work myself. Heck, that's half the fun of a project like this. I might have to look into a newer model TT, as well. I don't see my 951 getting out onto the street for quite a while. As for time, I work from home designing/installing high-end car audio/video systems. I always have 4-5 hrs a day to work on personal projects. The absolute best part...no kids and a wife that loves this stuff as much as I do.

I've got $20,000 into my '91 S2...if that tells you anything. And it still needs a repaint, proper S2 transmission reinstalled, sport seats and other tid bits. Should have no problem cracking $25,000 with my S2.

My 951 isn't even close to done. $2,400 on turbo and close to $4,500 for a full motor back exhaust? They get expensive, FAST. I suspect I'll have around $30,000 or more into my 951 when done. All stock internals and head for the most part.

I think it's interesting to read about the guy that Chris posted those links too. He obviously was a very good driver too, but I wonder what happened to him and his car?

A very impressive engine bay in here!! Also an interesting side topic. Solid Lifters. Who has experience with these?

BTW. It's funny how the stock fuel rail is considered a "must upgrade" in some groups, while it's still there on a $250k build
