lol, George don't worry. The fact that we pay soooooo much more for the same object is a major pisser but we have other things to balance it out. If we had the same car prices as you, I would have done the GT3 thing a long time ago.

The winner and still champion even though he has retired is Steve Savino.
For those that know Watkins Glen he did a 1:53….
The total cost has never been told…but it is commonly known to be well over $250k.

I was looking for this last night and forgot where I put it:
http://www.ajdesigner.com/fl_horsepo...apsed_time.php
Before I started the project decided how much "fast" I wanted and based on that with this platform if I could A) afford it and B) would I be happy with it when done. After a lot of reading mainly on here it seemed well within reach. Then I found a straight car and started. Year one shopped, bought and sent stuff out. Into year two doing assembly. These are great cars to mess with. Still having fun but getting ansey to be driving.

Ah yes. Good reference. Nice to see it takes $250k to be 37 secs faster than a Volvo station wagon. hahahaha.

To put 37 seconds into perspective Steve’s 944 is about 20 seconds of the Indy car lap times…
The good cup car drivers hover right around 2:00 flat. Occasionally a ‘pro’ will show up and run a 1:55 in a well prepped new cup car.
Oh yeah….my old ‘street’ 944 could run a 2:10….and the tires were not happy!

I didn't read all the posts, but the quick answer is to buy someone's car that's already been modified. Realistically, car sell for 25 to 50 cents on the dollar. That means for $25k, you can find cars that people have $50k, $60k and $70k into them.

which birngs us to the topic which has been discussed a lot lately is when is it time to just bump up to a 996/996TT due to tha MAJOR decline in their prices.
NICE condition 996 in the 25-30K and TT for 35-40K. And of course with the TT a simple re flash and you make another 75-100 more hp over stock.
Plus it is a car with far more modern amenities.

Both. I want both. But of course, as long as that pesky family deal keeps hanging around won't happen. Have to spend all my time and $ keeping the family fleet working. GRRRRRR. As I prepare to go pay the $1k deductable and more to get oldest sons Acura out of the body shop today...

Repair/parts costs on the 996 tt won't be cheap. One can find a used 951 block/crankfor a few hundred dollars if that (same as a 944), and a complete running engine for less than a couple of grand. 996 TT engines are in the $15k range, used and often not complete.

A 996 motor rebuild is about 24K done properly, and you will be doing this if you use the car to it's potential with another 200hp. My friends 993 just keeps on taking the abuse, but he has over 60K in just modifications, and that's with him doing the work himself.
Modding any car well costs money. My friends with M3 Turbos using the stage 2.5 kits from www.horsepowerfreaks.com spend over 24K just for the proper kit, and then you have all the other issues with brakes, suspension, etc.
All modded cars are a money pit, but we still seem to do it. At least we aren't sucking a stupid pipe
