Default 944 Advice

Hi all the is my first post on this site and it surely wont be my last because
i have many questions, i am looking to buy a 944 turbo soon. Please voice all opinions on this car good or bad...tell me everything i need to know

1. Are 944 turbos good reliable cars(This will be my weekend cruiser)?

2. What is the best year to buy?(Im looking at an 89 because of higher hp)

3. How much horsepower can they handle on a stock block(2.5l) and how much psi?

4. How hard would it to have 400-450hp at the crank?

5. Most import are they costly to maintain?

Thank you!

1. Yes - if properly taken care of.
2. 88 Turbo S, IMO.
3. 400rwhp reliably, and low-mid 20psi (with appropriate fuel).
4. Easy
5. Somewhat, yes. But not horrible if you can do most the work yourself (or with the help of fellow P-Car owners).

Thank you very much! Can it handle 20psi on stock internals? such as pistons and cranks? Im really looking to have a sweet little speed demon...Also what do these cars usually run in the quarter mile when modified? Thanks again

Yes - 20psi is no problem as long as you have enough octane.
The stock bottom-end is forged, and pretty stout.

These cars do quite poorly in the 1/4mi - trap speeds are ok, but time is ****ty. Frankly, they do not like to be launched, and doing so is asking to break stuff. But for roll-ons, they are hard to beat.

If you are used to hondas.. these are NOT the cars you are looking for..
Cost for parts are about 3xs what you are used to.. I know.. I came from the Honda crowd.

Not the best car for drag racing, but it's hard to beat the cost/performance you get for using it in real racing

Welcome to Rennlist.

If you're looking to get a 944 Turbo, please realize that your questions #1 and #4 are mutually exclusive.

Thanks for all the replys im really not looking to make it into a drag car(but i do still want it to be fairly quick in the 1/4) I really want something that handles great and that is pretty fast for taking to a track or just a fun weekend car,and yes i know parts will be pretty costly unfortuently.. How many pounds of boost(psi) does the car run stock? And what are some of the best aspects of this car such as performance goes? Thanks

it runs about 1 BAR stock. IIRC like, 11 PSI.

and to expand on what Luis is saying, here's 3 words to describe a 944 Turbo owner's general experience...

1) Cheap
2) Reliable
3) fast

Now pick 2 of those. the third is gone. can't have all 3.

Best aspects are definitely the handling, the turbo torque, etc. On mine, I have it chipped, and I push 17 PSI. only mods are an electronic boost controller, the chip, and a Tial wastegate. I'm putting down 270 HP, and 340 ft-lbs. so much torque when I hit boost, I sink back into the seat...

Granted it's not like the torque you'll see from say, Rogue_Ant's car.... woof.

wow thats pretty impressive! This car seems to be making me want to buy one more and more Im looking for something that is somewhat reliable since it wont be driven daily but yet pretty fast. How much does it cost to get a 944 turbo to say around the 300whp range? What is the highest horsepower range i could go while still being somewhat reliable and on pump gas 93 octane

Yep ,for a drag car look elsewhere. My lightly modded Turbo S will do 13's in the quarter, without abusing the trans axle. If you want to go faster... 951 transaxles seem to go for $1300 used LSD's a bit more.

I have similar mods as Honda racer, plus test pipe, WB o2,MBC,18 psi Max Chip'Lindsey dual port waste gate, 3 bar FPR,55 lb injectors ,Lindsey Stage 2 head. I usually run it at 17 psi but saw 26 when the EBC malfunctioned
,opps!

Oh yeah, what I quoted above is RWHP, as well as on 91 octane pump gas.

Your best initial mods would be a 3 or 4" catless exhaust, 3 bar fuel pressure regulator, a wastegate, and manual boost controller + chip. That alone will have your car plenty fast enough to have a lot of fun.
With an 88 turbo s or regular 89 turbo you'll see around 300 whp.

Spend a few evenings reading various threads on here about upgrades. There are reliable examples on here, but this board is littered with those that came and went. This car is expensive to sort out, and keep sorted, in stock configuration. You'll find many cars that have had big $ and go fast parts installed still have some nagging condition present. Endless trails of parts for sale because some vendor went under, or some other vendor is best, now. If you want 400-450 hp, the model year wont matter. Its a cool, unique, expensive to maintain car. You'll be watching for UPS trucks bringing parts all the time.

Asking how it does in the 1/4 mile tells me you'll rue the day you buy one.
