86 951 Suspension help
Just purchased an 86 951. I'm interested in changing the front suspension to that of the 87+ 951/968 type. I'm certain there are posts here detailing such but my searches are coming up with nothing helpful. I'd appreicate if someone (or several) could point to the posts regarding this switch.
Thank you.

At the very least you need the late hubs/spindles, bolting those on will change the offset. Your camber adjustment will be limited but Ive heard is OK for street use. To do it all you will also need the late tierods and control arms. Id throw in camber plates if its destined for track use.

Well I bought 87 hubs/spindles and redid the wheel bearings, bought late control arms and redid the balljoints and bushings, got a set of late tierods for my manual rack, added camber plates. I already had front bilstein escorts installed... I dont think there is anything else...just take it out and bolt it all back in depending on what setup you want.

Hmm, is it necessary to change to the later hubs/spindles for somewhat aggressive street use
I'd like to upgrade my 86's suspension also and was just considering a koni coilover kit in the back with new springs and shocks up front.

Do a thorough search. You need quite a LOT more info on this issue...and it's all on RL for you.
I'm not trying to be a jerk. There is really that much stuff to learn.

Maybe a suggestion on what to search for??? I have tried searching and am not coming up with anything. I know it has to do with my search terms but I've tried everything that makes sense to me. That's why I'm asking for help.

Also what are you wanting to do this for? If it's not for track then is it worth it?

no prob. RL search sux donkey now.
Search coil overs. bilstein, koni,
search my user name for threads.
Search SamGrant's user name.
Search oddjob
search Skip Wolfe
From there you will find lots of other info.
I've found that searching members names is about the only useful way to search now.

Hmm, yeah I've done a lot of reading on all of this, I'm just trying to find good ways of reaching my desired spring rates now.
I believe I'm going to go with inverted shocks using racer's edge lower shock mounts in rear and build around that.

switching to late offset hubs and spindles is pretty expensive. I would advise you to stick with early offset fitments, unless you intend to go racing pretty hard core.
If so, look into collecting the M030 spindles hubs brakes etc.
86's don't have ABS, so you'll have to look into that as well.
You could save some cash using a thicker T-bar, as well.
You need to balnce front and rear components or you'll have some odd, or even dangerous, grip issues.
It's all a system.

Yes, I plan on using the lower spring mounts in front to fit 2.5" id springs up front as well with new shocks.
I won't bother with ABS and I don't plan on any hardcore track time, maybe an auto x or two, maybe an hpde, but nothing serious.
Guess I'll stick with the early offset then. I'm only running ad07's in 205 up front and 255 out back. So I don't really need a still suspension that my tires wouldn't be able to cope with anyways I guess.
For this type of goal I hope that some decent pads and new fluid with SS brake lines will be sufficient, also.

Personally, I'd look into the Bilstein Firhawk set up. I think you'll find it just right. For a street car, I woiuld avoid going to any solid bushings except at the spring plate bushings. Otherwise, you could do a straight install, and get exactly what you want right from the box. No probs w/ t-bars etc.
