Default 2.7 OR 2.5 block ?.

Hi, I'm on the lookout for a 2.7 engine to use as a donor for a 3.0 build, what's the easiest way, without pulling the head, to confirm the engine is actually a 2.7, think I read somewhere that 2.7 is cast onto the block somewhere ?.

Paul.

Its easier to spot the differenece in the 2.7 and 2.5 heads than the blocks - intake manifold/ports are quite different. Do a search for pictures and you will see the difference right away.

Thanks Chris, I'd have no problem identifying the 2.7 head but there may be an issue dismantling a sellers engine before I paid for it, I thought the 2.7 and 3.0 blocks both had 2.7 cast on them somewhere ?.

You should find on the back portion of the block on the right hand side of the block an engine number type. It will be M44/xx, where the xx is the block identifier. if it is stamped with an 11 or 12, it is a 2.7 l, if it is 41 or 43 it is a 3.0 l. Hope this helps.

What I meant was you can tell the 2.7 from 10' away just by looking at the intake manifold and if the intake manifold is not attached the intake ports will give it away frrm 5' away! No disassmembly required.

Checked pictures of the 2.5 and 2.7 heads and I see what you mean about the inlet ports, thanks again.

Also the waterneck at the front of the head is different between 2.5 and 2.7 heads, so if it's mounted, you either have a 2.7 or 3L block.

Is that where the 2.5 head is welded/modded to fit to a 3.0 block ?, havent seen a pic of a welded head apart from one where the waterway was filled in.

Yes, that is where they modify 2.5 heads for 2.7L/3L blocks.

hey Blade I happen to have a complete 2.7 NA engine and a 3.0L crank. toying with the thought of selling......... $$ talks....... talk to me, pm if you like

England - ah **** just saw you are overseas. Nevermind I am not interested in an overseas transaction, and i suspect it will be much cheaper for you to buy local.

Thanks for the offer but you're right about buying locally, I've located a 2.7 engine just haven't done the deal yet, tbh I only really want the head and the studs as I'd rather use an 968 block & crank if I can locate one, not easy to find over here though.

I have a 968 engine if you want one but have a feeling we may have discussed it before?

Hello Nick,
Yes we have talked about your engine I'm suprised someone hasn't bought it, my 91 turbo only has 80k on it so I'm not sure if I want to go 3.0 on that or just start with a 968, it would be nice to think I could take the Hartech route and just change the rods, machine the standard pistons and fit a 2.7 head but we'll see.

Paul.
