Thankyou guys. I am deeply touched by your kind thoughts and wishes. I didn't mean this to go public but since it has I have been humbled by the nice emails and posts on here.
As many of you have probably already experienced, losing a parent is something we dread for much of our lives but put out of our thoughts. Like many big things in life, there are no instructions nor do we fall back on classes taught or lessons learned. You just somehow cope with the situation. My Father was lucky in that he led a long life and for much of it an enjoyable one. He was blessed with many friends and they were in turn blessed with his generous and unfailing loyalty. He was never a person to hold a grudge and got over fights very quickly. Preferring to have a drink and a laugh instead. In the last 15 or so years he was plagued with 2 bouts of cancer, a triple bypass, numerous skin cancers, and quite a few associated illnesses. He never complained or took it out on any of us. They bred them tough in generations past.
I have tried to remain positive in all this. We wanted to celebrate his life yesterday, not get all maudlin and gloomy. Many funny stories were told as we relived some of them at the wake.
I shall indeed miss him and count myself very lucky to have such a good bloke as my Dad.
Thanks again guys.
Patrick

I too share the feeling as I had two friends killed in a car crash on thanksgiving of this year. Glad you are able to have such a positive attitude though and it's incredible to hear what illnesses your dad was able to overcome. My sincere condolences to you and your family and I hope you all finish off this year in good health and happiness.
