CAN SOMEBODY COME CLOSE TO THIS IN THEIR P-CARS ??
I recently posted "190 mph in a Porsche 968" in the 968 forum. Naturally, the question equally applies to the 944... a crucial topic in the "190 mph" post are sources for transaxle gears that make high top end... and that is why I am also posting this topic here...
since so many of you build very fast 944s that run out of gear too soon running some of the stock gearboxes.... anyone with information about gearsets is always welcome... If anyone knows about Audi gears that can be swapped, and since 944 drivers with sick rides lust for more top end, I appreciate all the great responses I got there.
My original post from the 968 page:
i realize i'm adding very little to the great body of work you have all done... it's amazing that Porsche gave up on the front-engine flagship car and ended the manufacture of any variant of the 944, 968 or 928... Ferrari engineers thought pretty highly of the general design and built the transaxle "California....." and GM has put the front-engine/rear-transmission design into the LSx Corvettes beginning with the C5 and both cars are incredible.
i've wished to drive something that can go faster.... i've thought of one day, completing a 190 mph pass in my 968... i've wondered if any of you all would want to build a car up to go this fast, if anyone even cares, lol...... well, to begin, the stock transmission and differential hasn't a prayer of making any kind of serious speed, but taller gears are available for our 968 transaxles for high top end...
i realize that top end in the mid 180s might be done with a 3.0 turbo, but after you spend 18~25 grand building the engine, you're still going to need get some taller gears.... these builds sometimes are prone to **** star maintenance and meltdowns than a Chevy, and still have all the beauty, form and function that anyone could ever dream... Quoting from one other forum, "...there is not one issue that hasn't been solved."
i've been researching for some time how to set 968 transmissions up for more top end without breaking the bank....
anyway...

With all due respect Allan I have to wonder what the point of this question is. 190 mph is some serious speed and over the limit in most states by 120mph at best. Personally even if my 1987 944 could do that speed I wouldn't try it even on a track in a 23 year old car. Unless you can get to those speeds in a very short period of time most tracks don't have the room to do it anyways.

If you search this has been discussed way too many times. Lots of info about what's needed to be changed and different combo's that would "theoretically" do it.

Without getting into any other aspect of the question (hp needed, safety, etc), a 944 Turbo trans (3.375 r/p) with a 0.730 early 944N/A USA 5th gear set would be theorectically about 194 mph at 6500 rpm w/ stock diameter tires.

Josh, I appreciate this comment... Texas speed limit is 80 btw !!
There's a few people that would rather own a "supercar" GT2 or GT3, than what 911 Carrera owners drive. So I may not be alone in my thinking that more is well, MORE !! Even if it only starts on paper...
Theres is an interstate corridor in western _____ , not well patrolled, well maintained and with extremely long straights. I run Y rated tires.
There also seems to be this thing about just saying "I did it... My car can do that..." that is an inspiration to the pride that I take building and maintaining my 968. I would prefer to call my 968 a supercar and demonstrate in a theoretical sense, that Porsche blew it.
Porsche seemed afraid to admit that the Transaxle was every bit the equal or even superior design to the 911. That they not only stopped the 944S2/968 production but their 928 program as well, is something that bothers me for some reason, as none of these cars were ever developed to their potential.
I ran on a public road recently with a Nissan GTR which had a licence plate that said "DISTURBD." [in some states you can do up to 8 digits].
I don't like BMWs, but their roadsters save so much gas that they function well as illegal endurance cars, a good test of design.

Oh no.
Someone with a turbo Porsche who wouldn't even track 190mph.
While I understand this to some extent... Oh I sure as hell would.
I have done 160+ in a 951 on the highway and would more than be happy to do it again.
Maybe I'm a little crazy, but whatever
At 160 it seemed more than stable, pefectly calm and tracked great.
I have no 'need' to break 160, 170, 180, whatever, but heck, it will do it, why not.
It is quite fun.
I'm sure I am going to get hit like hell for this post from speed limit junkies, but I probably deserve it.

Reality check buba - you damn sure will impress.
Just because there are several 200+mph standing mile cars, make no mistake..... THAT IS INSANE. In that mph range you are generally talking 1000HP+ cars.
160+mph in the standing mile for a street car is crankin...... think not? Enter an event and see for yourself. I have. Make no mistake if you are not 500+HP you will run out of mile long before you run out of gear.
As a side note for everybody ready to post how they can easily hit 160 in a standing mile........ be a stud and post up your slips.
And no your buddy in the car watching the speedo is not even close..... without a properly timed and marked standing mile it is BS dudes.
