Bridges, do you run the standing mile?..or is it just salt flats? What are your speeds?

With all due respect, Porsche transaxles are the safest cars on the road. They don't age or rust very much. Most of the guys on this forum do certified inspections of their suspensions and running gear, change transmission oil etc or do their own inspections regularly... My man is Jerry at EPE, Natick, Mass. He's one of the most knowledgable Porsche mechanics in the world.

15 years ago, my 1987 944s did not feel 100% sure on high-speed runs... It lacked a proper splitter and I used to get what I can only describe as "front-end float" with my stock suspension, and old phony wheels and tires.

Recently in the wee hours, I was pulling a curve in my 968 going about 135 mph and feeling serious G-forces... I was able to get to 160 on the straight on this very nice stretch of Interstate. [from calculations of tack/tire, I was right at 160 mph @6350 RPM]. I run 25.6" inch Dunlop Sport 9000 275-35-18s in the rear.

I do my best not to drive like an ***, but on this occasion, the moment seemed ok... My 968 is a frigging brick compared to my old 944. I imagine you guys have solved the issues that I had with suspension, wheels, tires and splitters..... still.....

.

No. It's the taboo approach that everyone takes toward speed. Why the hell would you ever build a 400 or 500 wheel horsepower 951 and never try to explore it's limits? That's like Buying a Ferrari and restricting the thing to putting around at regular road speeds. Go buy a Cadillac haha! I'm kidding of course.

Seriously. I even had a conversation with an officer the other day. On what premise, I won't divulge, but the subject was how fast I had ever gotten the vehicle. He wanted to know and I told him. I said, "I've done somewhere just north of 140mph." He smiled and said, "I figured you've probably gone out and had some fun in this thing."

In the 60's and 70's, people would speed as fast as their cars would let them on interstate highways, and not even blink an eye doing so. Now days, it's, "You're a bad person that puts the public in danger any time you look at your gas pedal." I understand the need for safety and prudent driving manners, but... Come on... We didn't buy Porsches to look at them in the garage all the time. Just the same, we didn't buy them to simply look like ***** either. Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini- They're all famous for one major reason... Their cars go fast. Closely behind that is the fact that most of them drop panties faster than I can say, "Premature Ejaculation".

I'm not saying we should all go out and speed about like maniacs because of the car we have. I'm not even admitting to doing so myself. I've only gone north of 110-120 a few times, because frankly, that's about as fast as I feel comfortable going on an open road. It doesn't take very long to run 4th gear for everything it's got. But try to go any faster than that and I feel like I'm back in my Saturn trying to hit 100.

In the 951 I've run the salt flats, standing mile and ORR events.

Frankly I'm a little embarrassed to say,, but my best standing mile speed was just under 150mph. Car is certainly capable of more, but not the clutch.
Clutch slipped from the 5th shift until I eased out of the throttle at the end of the run......clutch grabbed, car surged forward, followed by the awful stench in the car...
The real bummer was until that moment my rpm indicated i had trapped over 165mph..... but not so much.

This was with a VRstage3, wasted spark, mucho supporting mods, 18psi

I was just looking at the Texas mile archives and see a 1953 Studabaker. The 951 is practically new compared to that. But it only did like 165 mph.

I believe the B5 Chasis Audis use a version of our trans. Not sure, but always heard rumors of using 944 LSD in the trans when I was building a b5 S4. I know that the gearing in those topped around 185-190 in an S4. Use the tip R&P and it was even higher. Just might be an alternative to look at for combos if this is the goal.

I have done 160+ in a 951 on the highway and would more than be happy to do it again.
Maybe I'm a little crazy, but whatever

At 160 it seemed more than stable, pefectly calm and tracked great.

I have no 'need' to break 160, 170, 180, whatever, but heck, it will do it, why not.
It is quite fun.

I'm sure I am going to get hit like hell for this post from speed limit junkies, but I probably deserve it.

you do deserve it so here you are -

You sir exagerate or are just a moron.... or both

and your speedo indicated 160 is in reality is about 135mph just so you know.

So at 160 indicated our cars are really doing 135, is this really true?
I guess I'll go drive my car with my gps and compare speeds, I had no idea they were so far off. Perhaps I can compare at 50, 60, 70, and 80 and check the percentage difference.

depends on the tires. for a 968 you'll be dead on by running about a 25.6 inch diameter tire before its worn down. Many guys run 25 inch tires and love the response they get in the final gear, especially in the last few thousands of miles of the tire's operating life, but they're not going nearly as fast as their speed indicates... the defect probably isn't as large as 2bridges says with most of the tires you all are running.

Allan- Can I see the picture of the FAST in a 944 please? I'm installing a .73 5th, but not too concerned with top speed.

Thanks

I used my GPS and compared to the speedo gauge today.
I found that at 50 the speedo was at most 1 mph off depending on how high you have your seat or if you're just taller.
60, 70, and 80 mph all showed about 1.5-2 mph off. I stayed at these speeds for quite some time to allow the GPS plenty of time to average it out.
I reset the max speed also and after cruising at right where it says 80 my GPS showed a top speed of 78.5 mph. I noticed that from where the speedo needle was right underneath the 80 tick mark to right when it's past it has a variation of around 2 mph on it's own.
All in all it is much more accurate than my 2006 gti.
This is with brand new 205/50/17 tires up front and 255/40/17 out back

My speedo was dead-on with my GPS at 120 (S2 trans, 265/40R18). Haven't tested above that.

Hmm that is a 26.3" tire though also.
I'm using a 25"
