Default vibration under acceleration

Recently I started getting a vibration coming from the rear of the car, which can be felt through the shifter. Only happens under load when accelerating.

I checked out the axles - all the CV bolts look tight, and I wasn't able to rotate the axles more than 1mm or so and there's minimal play front to back. The only thing I noticed was that the boots felt empty and could probably use some grease.

Is it likely that I just need to re-pack the CVs to get rid of the vibration, or should I be looking elsewhere?

At what rpm does the vibration start? I had the same thing happen and started a thread last year. It turned out the be a bearing in the torque tube.

It's hard to tell, at first I thought it was only happening between 3-4k rpms but it seems to happen at higher rpms sometimes too.

Is the vibration the same when you have the clutch in and out? Sitting still does it go away when the clutch is in? If yes, it is probably a bearing in the tt.

I really only notice the vibration when I'm accelerating.. seems fine when sitting still.

I'm taking the car into the shop soon to have them check everything out, so I'll just have them figure out what the problem is then. Thanks for the help.

OK, well I tried revving the engine in neutral and there is a definite vibration through the shifter right around 2500 rpms and then again between 3500-4000 rpms. When I push the clutch in, the vibration goes away. I guess it could be the trans mount too as I haven't had a chance to check it yet.

tt bearing is bad. either need to rebuild it or buy one already done. taking the old one out and installing a new one is a process and is much easier with a lift. it took two of us with a lift about 6 to 8 hours.

thanks for the help... I guess the good thing is I didn't go and buy new axles that I didn't need. definitely not looking forward to removing the TT though

Bad luck there but I'm sure your 'assistant' won't mind getting her hands dirty....

Update: I took the car into the shop this week, had them look everything over. Found 2 of the transmission bolts completely missing and the other 2 barely holding! Looks like this was the cause of the vibration, so I may have dodged a bullet. They also fixed my belt noise issue (balance shaft rollers on wrong eccentric position). Sometimes it really pays to take it to the pros.
