Probably a dumb question, but do 930s and 951s use the same turbo? My dad still has the OEM turbo leftover from when his 930 was still stock, the car is a 1985 Euro-spec 930. Here's what the turbo says on it if it helps:

If I recall correctly, there was a 'lister that swapped a 951 engine into an N/A. I think his name was andy? I don't recall what he did for the intercooler though.

A pile of parts, without a pro who has built a number of reliable, proven engines, will return to it's unassembled state, just a pile of parts.
We've seen scores fo these builds, here on the list. There are very few that are running well and reliably. Those that are were every penny of 15k. There are a few that were privately built, by the owner, and even those cost more than 10k.

What about it would implode? Are you saying that it is impossible to build a turbo motor with factory 944 2..7l rods/pistons/crank/head, an aftermarket MAF, injectors, and no KLR? Why not I ask? You might not be able to run 20 lbs of boost through it, but that doesn't mean its not possible to get 5-10psi of boost, which isn't a trivial increase over N/A.
I realize that properly tuning a custom setup like a 2.7l turbo engine isn't easy, but its not impossible either, particularly if you utilize well-developed components that were designed to work together for the engine management
I'm sorry if I gave the impression that it was a very cheap or easy process, but I think that the previous poster had made it sound much more complex than it is.

You now need an exhaust manifold, IC, wastegate, boost control, injectors that match you fuel needs, and the list goes on and on.
Tconn wasn't remotely over-stating the complexity of doing it well. By the time you pay for all of the mods, to turbo an NA 2.7, you could have purchased a 951 in pretty good shape, with the benefit of the chassis and brakes, etc.
It makes no sense to turbo an NA 944.

Nay sayers are a dime a dozen...for the other side of the coin, I t-charged a euro 85.5. Got a donor '86 for 1000.00 from a tow trick driver. Swapped engine harness, suspension. You have to cut out about an inch in the nose panel om the underside to clear the 951 inter cooler. Everything else was butter. Keep your tranny as a spare you never know. I did it alone, broke in a one car garage. Donor in first drop engine w/carrier and wiring harness. If you take the speedo from the turbo and use the harness, the wires for dash boost gauge work as they are there anyway from the harness to the dash console. It was so long ago, I had a dream and no cash...I went to the dealer for some injectors for the N/A and asked about turbo charging my car...they said the same thing as any nay sayer would...can't be done or too difficult.
I drove it up there when I was done and they gave me a job...I still use they same tools I did then (mostly) little over 14 years ago.
Now I am finishing a 16V turbo based on 968 and I only mean to say that you can do what you choose to complete. Nothing started ....

If I were you, I would look for a turbo with a blown motor and swap your 2.7 in or swap all the turbo stuff over.
You can find a non running turbo for less than 2k, then all you need is the EMS stuff.

So, do I understand that you bought a donor 951 and transferred over the engine and suspension to a 944 n/a? If so, that sounds like a rational approach if you have a nice n/a and find a good 951 donor for a thousand bucks. Trying to strap a turbo onto an n/a motor is a different proposition all together I'd say, especially in a world where a cent 951 can be bought for $6k.

If you are worried about insurance, buy a beater to drive daily, sell the 944S and buy a 951. My 951 costs me $20/month extra on my insurance as a secondary vehicle (I'm 22). You could also possibly get collector car insurance if you've got a daily driver.

^^That sounds like good advice to me.

Plus infinty to what chris said about by a 951 roughy...
also the 2.7 head and block are worth something on this forum ..
Joint the forum and ask if someone will swap you the entire 2.7 engine set up for a 951 set up.
the other thing you can do is turn this in to who has bits list ...
I'm sure there are plenty of unwanted turbo bits floating around here from were people have done bigger turbos manifolds etc etc ....
