2.7 N/A to a 2.7 Turbo
OK, so after having my 2.7 944 N/A for about a year I'm ready for a bit more power. I was gonna sell it and buy a 951S that a friend has for sale, but priced the insurance for me (18) and it was more than double of the N/A.
Soooo, I've been looking at other options to make my current car faster like swapping in a 968 motor, converting the car to a 3.0litre turbo, etc, but I was wondering how difficult it would be to just turbo the 2.7? Obviously I would need a 951 donor car, but would the parts from it just bolt right up, or would it require modification, and if so how much? Would I need lower-compression pistons? I've heard of people turning 2.5 Turbos into 2.7 Turbos, but couldn't find anything on taking a 2.7 N/A to 2.7 Turbo. How big would performance gains be with my 2.7 Turbo vs. a 2.5 Turbo vs. a 3.0 liter? Any help/input is appreciated.

Thank you, I've used forums long enough to know that. The only relevant thread I found when I searched was just about what needed to be done to a 2.7 head for it to be turbo'd. I want to know more about what would be required for the complete 2.7 to 2.7turbo project. Maybe I missed a thread or something...

The general consensus is you can't turbo an N/A. There's a picture floating around that shows the difference between the turbos and the NAs. It's much more than just the engine; the chassis, suspension, tranny, hubs, spindles, brakes, axles, etc, they're all more beefed up to handle the increased power and stress that comes with having boost. There is one guy on here who has done it, can't remember who. I haven't done much research behind power increases on an NA but you might look at a supercharger?

as the previous owner of a 2.7 n/a i understand the want for more power. The only suggestion i have is to learn to drive your car until you are using it all. I know after one year at 18y/o you are not. Do some autocrosses, do some track events etc...

I've been racing karts since I was 8, autocrossing a 911 since I was 14, and doing track days with the 911 since I was 15. I've only been doing track days with the 944 for a year. Not saying I don't have room to improve with the 944, just that I'm not inexperienced with racing in general.

The 2.7L motor is a good starting point for a 3.0L turbo. You'll need the following
968 crank
forged rods
Mahle 104.5 turbo pistons
modify the head with 951 exhaust valves and 951 springs.
951 intake modified to match the 2.7 head
951 headers, cross over, wastegate etc.
951 motor mount/ turbo mount
Turbo
intercooler and pipes
fuel rail
fuel pump
injectors
DME/KLR
harness
951 oil filter/cooler housing
951 oil cooler
951 heat shields
951 AOS
951 bell housing and clutch setup
and a bunch of other things
The chassis is the same as a 951 and all the 951 body parts will bolt up.
you'll need a 951 transaxle
951 front hubs and spindles
951 calipers and rotors
The suspension is the same except the 951 has stiffer struts
torsen bars and sways.
If your car is in mint condition and you want to keep it finding a donor
951 would be the way to go.
