Anyone know what production numbers are for the Cayman? Porsche sold lots of 944's in the 80's and so they are now plentiful and cheap but the Cayman seems to be aimed at a narrower market (track junkies).

Future, I don't know where you get your weight specs from... but this is from the PCA Club Racing rule book, which classifies cars based on their published weights (and these are the minimum weights for stock class racing):

'86-'88 944 turbo
3049 lbs

'88-'89 944 turbo S
3148 lbs

'96-'98 993
3214 lbs

'99-'01 996
3060 lbs

All Cayman
3016 lbs

All Cayman S
3104 lbs

Caymans are great cars - I'm not saying they aren't. But, for the next several years, I think we'll continue to see the early 996 prices below used Cayman prices - and a 996 weighs 40 lbs less and has 5 more HP... obviously not a lot, and I think you'd have to say they're comparable, at best. And, oh by the way, they race in the same class.

I think saying one is drastically better than the other is simply not true.

Having said all that, however, I do think there will be a huge market for performance parts for Caymans in the coming years, and I think you're wise to try and get into that market.

And it rocks. I cannot imagine how awesome a Cayman S would be with a solid roof and stipped of all but the basics. I will find out within the next couple years... however I may wait until a 9A1-based model is in reach.

From the January issue of Pano, which I happen to have right beside me: in the first 11 months of 2008, 5,825 Boxster/Cayman series cars were sold. In 2007, it was 8,850.

However, it doesn't say what the % split of Cayman/Boxsters was... Either way, I think it's a smaller volume than the 944 series.

Dude You talk race I talk track ...

You might as well talk Planes and I talk submarines ...

So what has that got to do with the price of FISH?!? let along the weight of your catch?????

Mate you are missing the point as we are not talking race cars here TRACK TRACK TRACK ... race WILL follow.

996 is a good buy at the moment BUT do not see this heavy weight pig as an appreciating assist AS IT IS NO 993 or 964 for that matter - I've owned them all and I thought the 996 was a disaster and mine was a TT which = bag of SH1TT - Sorry for my opinion but go ask the same on the 993 or 964 board and you get the same answer hence why I've gone back to a 993 plus my 952 and that's after all the RS, gt3 cars I've owned.

996 as a convertible I can forgiver though as a nice summer cruiser but that is not track monster!

Can I ask what you just purchased?

I'd love a 993 but, for right now its 996, track car, and my 951. I'm still on a budget. When I hit the lotto everyone will know. I'll have a modded white 993 Turbo S in the driveway.

I think the Caymans will be incredible track cars. Judging by how well the spec Boxsters are doing - in only the first year or two of SBOX being on track they are turning laps as fast or faster than any 951 based car short of "RSR" prepped vehicles. At my local track TWS SBOX's are turning 1:56 and this with the regular 97-99 motor. That is as fast as many modded RS Americas with Motons and 997GT3's on race slicks (not R comp). I can only imagine what a stiffer and sharper Cayman chassis can do especially since there is even more power.

The Cayman is an excellent driver's car but it shares too many styling cues with the ***-engined Porsches. It's a shame Porsche design their non-911 cars base their overall design on the 911 which has got seriously uglier since the 996. The Panamera would certainly have looked decent without that ugly rear reminiscent of the 996/997.
IMHO anyway.

As for selling either of my 944 to budget for a more recent Porsche, I'd rather be seen naked at the wheel of a metallic pink Civic Type R.

Not really too keen to get a 996/997. I don't really like rear-engine that much.

we can go to walter's porsche next week, you give me a check and ill buy you the car, my credit is great

Another RL'er had his Cayman f/s a few months back, IF I could have sold my 2 current 944s is short order, hell yeah I would've done it.

I don't go into the Gayman BS, it's a Porsche.

I haven't purchased anything lately. I bought a 914 in '95 that I still have... I bought my first 944 in in '96. Bought my Turbo S in '00 - that has slowly evolved into a track car - which I currently race. 2 years ago I bought a 996 C4 as a daily driver.

I'm a fan of all Porsches, and have driven most models (and most of those on the track. I like them all... and, in fact, forgot what we were arguing about.

Heh, if I could write one check for the car, my credit rating wouldn't be an issue, now, would it?

Seriously, I'm better off this way. I'd be tempted otherwise, and I don't need to be buying a 75k car right now, when I can just put 25-30k into my uberswapmobile and walk off with something just as cool.
