Sorry for the confusion.
Just to refresh your memory, the race 968 turbo used a restrictor plate to keep the power down.

I was referring to the "off the lot" 968 that was 3.0 liter 236hp, 5.9 sec to 60 mph and ran 14.4 in the 1/4 mile (6-speed version). I could not find where Porsche had to decrease its' power output so as not to compete with the 911.

I was not referring to a race inspired turbo that was not widely available to the public.

In comparison, the "off the lot" Cayman that is their 2.7 liter 245 hp, had to be "dialed back" from the Cayman test vehicle's estimated power of 307hp as it was to close to the 911 Carrera's 325hp.

Perhaps the 951 also had the factory ability for a reliable 60+ hp jump and Porsche just decided not to do it. All I was saying is that I don't remember any factory 951's with a hp rating of 320+hp and Porsche dialing them back to keep the sales away from the 911's.

Not trying to start an arguement or saying the Cayman is far superior to the 951.

the 924 carrera GTR had 375hp back in 1980, it's a well known fact that Porsche detuned the 951 and 968T in order to keep them below their flag ship.

I’ve seen few Porsches over the years I wouldn’t like to have. I’d certainly take a Caymen S for the right price, same for Boxter S. That said, one of best pals has spent a life time in Porsche dealers as tech, service writer and service mgr plus his own shop a few years back. When we were teens we hung out at Economy Cars with his dad and old Sid. That said, he has counseled me again and again to think long and hard before laying out the bucks for any 993 derivative. After reading the article in this month’s Excellence I see what he means. Still, I’d like to have one.

Now don't argue. His 'Lartness' has spoken. The 951 is the best car in the Universe and will be for all time. End of story!!!

Im not trying to say the 951 is not a nice car and I still own and like mine but there is a time where the cars age just well, shall I say more of a trouble to drive everyday then really have fun with.Yes I also grew up with the 951 as my favorite car but DAMN you have to keep up with the times and move on ....

And for lart I think you would b alittle more surprised in the performance of a cayenne CTTS have you been in one or drove one??

Costas
Point taken. I like to be accurate about actual experience. Both my uncle and my dad owned early 944's, but I wouldn't say that I "grew up" with one. Lots of people here repeat what they have read on the internet without first hand experience. I just like to know that I'm getting first hand experience instead of regurgitated "knowledge."

As I have continued to stress, my comparison is for the off the lot models. Not a limited/highly modified/not mass produced production run. As in:

1.924GTR-17 made, of which an estimated 3 were street legal.
2.968T- of which only 15 were made and only available on the European mainland.

I have found numerous articles referring to the detuning of the Cayman to stay below the 911, but none of the detuning of the 951 to stay below it. Can you refer me to a source? I am very interested in the history side of our cars, and that would make for some interesting reading. As well as something to throw in the faces of 911 owners.

Thanks, and sorry for any confusion in my earlier posts.

Hey thanks kevin yes almost everything I talk about is from my own personal experience some good some bad.

Well not to side with Lart on this CPR( cause of the cayenne ctts issues) but why you think the 951 makes more HP JUST off of chips then almost any other car out there ....because they didn't want it to surpass the 911 turbo. If my mind serves me right the 944turbo was a lil faster then the 911 turbo in 86 0-60. Not tryin to get into a discussion you to are in just a point of view you both missed.
