Default Exhaust feedback

Im looking for feed back on different exhsust setups you guys have tried.
For instance, I had one system(stock tubing) in which the muffler was replaced with a straight pipe,(stock cat), Sounded pretty good.
Other system, Stock muffler but cat bypass, didnt sound too bad.

So some questions: if anyone has had any experience; Using a small bullet style resonator, would it make much difference if the resonator was put as far forward as possible, VS at the rear of the straight pipe OR even inplace of the muffler?

I put both the rear section with the straight pipe(inplace of the muffler) and the cat bypass together and it was a bit loud at idle but got a bit quieter as the rpms rose to about 1500, and actually sounded pretty good, if a bit loud. So all I really want to do is kill the "push rod big block V8 sound" at idle, and turn down the volume about %15, overall, But I don't really want to "muffle" it. Like the difference between turning down the volume on your radio, or putting a towel over the speaker, you know?

Any opinions on "race mufflers" vs resonator?

All I know is, the welds and sound coming from my SFR exhaust are simply beautifull.

The lindsey exhaust is ok. They work.

SFR quality is WAY higher from what I've seen... you get what you pay for.

B&B test pipe and cat-back, no rice. Louder than stock but, still has a nice sound. You're never going to make a 4 cyl beat the rumble from a big cam V-8.

thanks for the replies however not exactly what I was looking for.
Has any one used "race mufflers" if so do they do much? Say forinstance I had a completely open system, but just wanted to tone it down a bit, would it do much? if so, where would you place it?

3" dp to 3½" high-flo cat to 4" cat back & Magnaflow muffler. 94 db @ 4500 rpm. Idle sounds slightly wild (like ancient Group B rally car), but while driving the noise is almost non-existent. WG opens to 4" area, so when it's open, "It sounds like fighter at take-off with afterburner..." =)

the arcitexture of the car kind of dictates the muffler placement. I would say almost the same as Pete95 wich is go as big as you can fit all the way I'm using a 4" muffler posing as a cat just behind the starter for my 3.0 and a and 3.5" tube into gutted standard cat shell for my 2.5 .

My car has a 3'' Fabspeed test pipe section (downpipe back) and the SFR cat-back (also 3'') with Bullet muffler. Love the way it sounds. Its strange because it sounds much different in 1st gear than any other. If i bring it up to 5-6k in first (slowly rolling on, not punching it) it has a very raspy note and sounds absolutely bad *** bouncing off the buildings in the down town. Its pretty loud, but not 'too' loud.

My friend has the stock cat and no muffler on his car. Extremely loud, but sounds pretty good also. Still a 2.5'' system aswell.

If you want turn down the volume a bit, i would put a resonator where the cat is located. I think it will sound closer to stock depending on your muffler choice. I think the stock cat pipe actually has a built in resonator along with the cat, but i might be wrong on that.

I ran my car with no muffler, 3" exhaust and no cat for a little while, just too loud for everyday driving.
Adding a magnaflow muffler did quiet it down enough.

+1, Fabspeed 3" sounds gret and not too loud. I have GHL 2.5" on my S2 cab and it was soooo loud I had to install a new resonator behind the CAT, and it's still louder than the 3" Fabspeed on the Black Car. BTW, I also run "race cat" from FabSpeed and it is a little quiter than the straight pipe, not a ton though.

Have the full 3" Fabspeed waiting to go on, so I'm pleased by the feedback I see here.

I presently have a one-off 2-1/2" system with free-flow cat and magnaflow muffler and it sounds very nice - not ricey at all. This replaced the stock system and was a nice step up in both performance (I do see a little quicker spool time) and sound (big improvement in exhaust note).

I also got a ride in the Lart-mobile when it had the full 3" Fabspeed system with no cat/no muffler - it wasn't near as loud as I thought it would be FWIW (in fact, I don't think I realized it was sans cat/muffler until Luis pointed it out after the ride).

Installed the complete Fabspeed last night. Straight forward installation except one bolt at the header was too close to the 3" pipe to get a socket on it. Used a little "big screwdriver" persuasion. If you install the Fabspeed check the proximity of the bolts to the pipe to assure that you can get a socket over it. The other option would be to use a crows foot.

Full 3" system on the 2.5L No cat or muffler. Just a resonator. Sounds fine when cruising. Mean when flat to the floor, 4000rpm and up.
