A GT turbo cant run in oil only? That doesnt sound right.... Unless you had no oil restrictor as well?

It had a restrictor, the whole center cartridge was discolored from heat.
Apparently it doesnt take much.....

Poolin951, Sorry to hear about your turbo. However, the failure may not be caused by not having water going through the wet section. There are a few that use this turbo on air cooled cars with no water cooling. Of course it is best to cool the GT turbos, however, I don't think that no coolant caused it to fail in such a short period (less than a hour on the street).

You might want to investigate further to determine the "real" cause of the failure. Talk to your turbo supplier, maybe they can examine the turbo and figure something out. It will be terrible to install a new turbo to have the same thing happen again.

Good luck!

If not used properly, it seems journal bearing or dual ball bearing turbos can fail just the same. But i'm glad when I solve my problem, it will out spool any

Don't feel bad man, I tore apart a built single turbo SUpra motor after the guy lost most of his oil pressure and thought he could make it the mile home...... it was ugly..........

Had brass up in the head.... lifter buckets balloned..... turbo shaft on the could move up down left to right........ crank was band and from what I hear bent, main bearings were shot, cams were shot.. he had just got the motor built and in the car a few days before.....

He now has one of the first tripple ball bearing turbos and is like a T-72, I have not seen it but am told it was one of the first made... only like 6 monhts old or so..

Any turbo can blow just as easy as the next regardless of what kind of bearins it has...

I like the billet impellers myself

Spoolin... we ran a gt30 for 6mos without coolant. it held up, but died eventually. I don't think a 45 min drive was the issue.. It was something else.

Im curious. Are you sure your balance shaft main (With bearing) was installed on the correct side - Only One of the shaft mains has a hole for the oil.. AND it must be oriented in the proper "up" position.

Dont get me wrong I had about 5hrs drive time on the turbo.
The whole center cartridge has hot spots on it.

That's a very insightful possibility. So insightful, in fact, I'm guessing it has happened to you, lol. It's a good place to check, though.
