It needs about 10 degrees timing advance in the upper RPMs to keep the torque level flat, that is the reason it drops off. It's not the turbo, it's the last few cells in the timing table. The 3.0 liter's timing is quite different from the 2.5's. It's not rocket science, and I'm just saying.

Great numbers though. I'm sure it's a blast around town, clean engine bay as well.
Ok, how do you know it needs 10 degrees more timing in the upper cells.? I didn't see the timing map posted anyhwere

I don't know about 10 degrees specifically, but suffice to say we are getting started on gaining control over the timing. Also, I opted not to run the VR race gas maps on these runs, until I have a chance to mull over the baseline. I believe John was referencing that when he said yet more power is just a flick of the switch away.

Curious if anyone is aware of a 951 motor that's made 1bar boost by 3k rpms, while also making over 500hp and 500 ft lbs. at the wheels?

My last engine (originally from Markus951) made 1.4 bar at 3400 rpm and delivered 495 rwhp at 6700 rpm where the run was stopped. The power curve was still headig upwards so it's safe to say it made over 500 rwhp at 7000 rpm.
That was at 19-20 psi pump gas.
It's a 16v so the whole power range is shifted upwards.

It's so easy to get caught up in the theoretical side of things... adding this, adding that.. The only reason I would make more mods to your engine would be to make the same power at lower boost levels.

I cannot say anything specific about this engine, but I agree with you that especially the 3 liter engines needs a lot more advance in the higher rpm's.

How much timing are you guys running on your 3.0 engines from 3500 - 7000rpm? Mine is not optimised due to the fact that previously my car was knock limited by the poor cooling and intercooling. Now this is fixed and temps are under control I am ready to re visit the timing advance map and wondered what amount of advance other 3.0 owners are running through the full boost rev range and at what psi.

A 951 motor would be a 2.5, not a 3.0 . That would be hard to find!

Thought I'd give a little update since the dyno last year. Since then I've added VR's wasted spark with ignition timing control to smooth out the ignition under high boost. It made a much bigger difference than I expected from a seat of the pants perspective. Also increased the air filter and moved to the 928 throttle body and SFR intake. Also moved the VR's V-flex and more timing advance. After this, I plan to upgrade the intercooler and maybe spring for SFR headers before calling it done. Here's how it looks now...

Looks good.
Is the 928 t-body a direct bolt on?
Are you going to dyno it to compare with your original #'s with these new mods?

If you compare those parts on George's car, you will see why I mention the breathing! I suspect a stronger ignition and some tuning to the a/f and timing will help on the top end. If I added a SFR intake and stage 2 headers, I suspect I'd be quite close to George, except with 1 bar boost at 3k (if I could get the dyno guy to start at 2500 or so...). This was a baseline -- stay tuned for things to come!
Nice run Tom,

We recently removed the intake and found that we had the stock 951 gaskets installed without any modification. These factory gaskets are about 25% smaller than my port matched intake to 2.7 large valve head.

We purchased new gaskets and cut them to match the head and intake. The car now idles much better, turbo spools faster, and the top end is much better. It's just running pig rich now. I know more air should have leaned things, but just the opposite was the result.

We are going to the mountains next weekend for a 500 mile road trip. My TEC GT tuner and friend is coming with me to do some additional tuning. The car should do much better at the dyno now that we got rid of this restriction. Sure glad I pulled the intake when we installed the cometic valve cover gasket. I was surprised to see this, but we fixed the issue.

The dyno shop we have used here in Tucson just sold their dyno. We are looking for another shop locally.

Glad to see your car running well. You have got to agree that these 3.0 motors make these cars nuts fast. I had a ex Formula 3 driver take my car for a spin. He's still talking about it. He is following us up to www.antlerridge.com next weekend in his modded Elise. We'll do some seat time in each.

Congrats!

George
