Default 8 hours into the clutch job and....

still don't have the flywheel off cuz of the stupid cheesehead bolts!!!! Had to cut where the crossover pipe ties into the wastegate and will weld it back on later. Three of us spent two hours trying to get the crossover off not including me pulling the intake and fuel rail in 40 minutes. So basically, after 8 hours, the bell housing is off. I'd hate to think what this hell would be like without a lift. For those of you who have done it on the ground, I commend you, because I simply don't have the patience for that grueling experience, this one's bad enough. End of rant.

I feel your pain mate. I did mine on the ground, and the first time it was a REAL test. Pulling things apart for the first time after 20 odd years of grime and heat cycling was a real PITA. The good news is that its much easier the second time

Ahhh, the impact wrench. Thank god for leftover tools from the motorcycle days.
Did my clutch on the floor. Fortunately I was in no hurry and took a month to do it. Still, it wore out a few shirts and one sore back.

I found that using a jeweler's screwdriver to dig out the crap in the triple square bolts let me get the bit seated much deeper.

Also be aware that replacement pressure plate bolts may be different. I ordered 9 new ones from 944online and 5 of them were Torx heads, not triple square. I didn't use them.

I'm pretty sure I replaced my PP and flywheel bolts with high tensile steel allen key bolts, FWIW.

That's definitely worth looking into because I got the same damn cheeseheads in my clutch accessory kit. I'd still like to know how ya'll get the crossover pipe off up by the turbo without pulling the engine cuz we tried every which way and the bolt on the lower left side was all but accessible. Got the PP/FW/Clutch all out this morning. Took the flywheel to be turned at the machine shop. Thankfully no more "Porsche clutch parties" in the shop until 4am trying to beat the weekend and get something to the machinists. Doing that after a full day of work and then turning around and going to work today kicked my @ss so we're taking a break until tomorrow. Then it's back to the grind and the hell of putting it all back together.

Did you try heating the wastegate pipe connection good with a torch? For the cheesehead bolts heating would probably help also. Theres a few bolts i would've never got off otherwise.

Another suggestion is making sure your using Quality tools, I have yet to strip a bolt and i do this on a daily basis. A method i use is to gradually increase pressure on the ratchet/wrench instead of going all out works quite well.

Only use snap-on, that way if we break something, we just let the snap-on guy know and when he comes on his weekly stop he hooks us up with a free replacement. Getting the wastegate off wasn't the problem. The part of the crossover that ties into the wastegate was in the way when we were trying to get the bell housing off. I was told on an 86 you could get it off without taking off the crossover but it was tight. Turned out not to be true, but there was one bolt on the crossover that we couldn't get to at all so we cut the part that ties into the wastegate and we'll weld it back on. So removing the intake/fuel rail turned out to be a waste. Luckily I've taken off the intake and fuel rail so many times I can do it in 30 minutes so it's not too much time lost.
