Check this out. 996/Boxter tranny transplant.

"He told me that the boxster/996 tranny bellhousings matched that of the 944 TT except for the top 2 bolts. So thats what that plate is doing there in the picture. That along with a coupler from a 944 grafted to a clutch center spline from a boxster/996 mated the 944 TT to that tranny. Then the mounts are just welded tubing. I dont know about how the CV's bolted up but im sure he had custom ones made or got lucky that either the boxster/996 CV's bolted up or the 944 CV's bolted up."
What do we think of this?

That is very interesting! Does anyone know the hp/tq potential of the Boxster/996 tranny?

996 trannies are strong I think, just look at the tuned cars running races with stock boxes and high hp, and I've never heard bad stuff from them? I've abused the 996 we had plenty and it held up good.
that beeing said, wont a 996 tranny be wrong as it gets input from wrong side? boxster has engine on the "right" side

But what is the difference between 996n/a and 996tt tranny?

but, I don't think you can use a 996 tranny ? it's going the wrong way around.
boxster has engine on the "right" side of the tranny, meaning in front, 996 is on back, so if you flip it the right way, you will have 6 speed reverse
some of the internals might be used though?

Yeah it had me confused as they are saying 'Boxter/996' in the same breath. While technically they're a very similar engine & box, are the gears running opposite to each other or the same way? Are they flipped over so the whole 996 is actually upside down or turned around if you see what I mean? In other words if you flip it over, the left wheel remains the left, whereas if you turn it around the left becomes the right and therefore are the gears different? I'm starting to go cross-eyed even writing this. Any ideas?

Drifting
Just an observation... but did anyone else notice that the Boxster/996 transmission has a mount in the rear of the box, very similar to the "944 transmission brace" mentioned earlier?

Race Car
I believe they are capping the rear output or front in the 996's case.I am not sure but looking at the rs2 tranny that is what I would do with it as well.
I haven't been able to bring over my old na trans to do a direct comparison, maybe tomorrow.

I have a spare torque tube laying in sweden (deep woods) not kidding.. gonna go over there and try to fetch it, also think I found a 01E quattro box (broken) for testing. so now I need a spare 996 tranny or similar.. hmm

Burning Brakes
All the G31 snailshells and 016's that went in 924T's that Ive seen came with a rigid brace from the rear of the tranny to the unibody. This is something all the 944 016/083's dont seem to have...maybe Porsche didnt want to trade the ride quality for strength at such low HP levels....
