Ok, I'll chime in. I'm so broke, I can't afford to pay attention. This economy is kicking my ***.

The 968 gearbox project is at a dead stop. It turns out there is no option for a taller ring and pinion. That said, there is a taller ring and pinion I found for my 951 Turbo S box so that's the route I'm going. It's still going to be a little pricey but nothing compared to the 968.

I will think you will eventually break something in your tranny with 400whp. It's just a matter of time. I would suggest having the gears cryo treated and remmed. That will help the tranny hold up to almost whatever you throw at it. At least way better than stock. That's what I'm going to do.

Know the feeling Joe. I'm not sure what I'm going to do now. Couple of projects going at once. Need to consolidate but that brings quite a few decisions to bear. I've got this awesome tranny just sitting in a crate but it's not a matter of just swapping it out into my road/track car so what to do???
Have a great new year anyway!

I guess I don't understand the need for an "unbreakable" tranny. I mean, everything on our cars breaks eventually. My car makes 380tq to the wheels, does 30 DE/track days a year and has only broken one tranny in 12.5 years. Used factory LSD boxes cost < $1500 and take 2 hours to change with one guy. 968 boxes are similar cost but require adding LSD. I mean if you are dragging it, I understand, and I'm interested to know what it would take to put in a GT2 trans. But, why blow the money?

yeh good point it is far cheaper and easier to just deal with the breakage than it is make it indestructible its not like a con rod bolt in wich a failure destroys all around it
Also i think the most cost effective solution to drive shafts is carry a spare and joint the Road side assist auto club and have them change it for you .
I think once you address the trans axle moving the drive shaft strength is just right i want it to break befor the innards of the trans as it is easy to change out .
putting a ring in white paint pen around the bolt heads is a great way to check that the bolts arn't moving.

I think its kind of for bragging rights .
My bragging rights are different I like to brag
" i made that"" i got that for 8 bucks"
I wont brag about the thousands of hrs spent making stuff and searching for the correct 8 buck part at the junk yard ..

I can understand that! I have countless "low budget" projects lying around unfinished. Most of them would have been cheaper if I had actually just paid someone from the outset. :-)

I was looking at the GT2 tranny for a project that was going to be developing considerably more hp/tq than Weston has stated on his. That's why I decided to make the leap to something that is known to hold more power than the 951 box.

im going for over 500WHP, and over 7-800nm though...

same for mr 333pg333, we are both nutters.

my personal economy is still very good, but with the currency beeing ****ed, a GT2 tranny is now 45-50% more expensive than it was 3 months ago! :|

as for axels, I never managed to brake a single 1, in 2 seasons, on 285 and 295 R spec rubber, launching hard, going sideways, regular track duty, drags etc... not a single tranny either, but I'm getting over 100% more volume now that should help.

Anders,

Have you looked at using the Corvette torque tube and trans? I have not heard of it being done, which probably means it's not easy, but was just wondering.
