Just alittle info, I took a bare shell to the scrap yard the other day. It still had a nose panel, windshield and rear xmember. It weighed 528lbs IIRC. I weighed my track car project sans engine and sparco seats (but with transaxle, torque tube, suspension, bodywork, wiring, full glass, metal doors, power window/mirrors, lexan hatch, cage, etc, etc) and it came in at 1716lbs. I figure I can probably pull another 2-300lbs out of the car if I got serious and I'll probably add another 500~ in engine/seats.

Wow. Is that actually street legal?

It should be pretty quick with all that weight missing....

Does he do any events with it?

Currently has lap belts. Have just received racing seats and will install with 5-point harnesses. Yes, it is street legal.

Add arm tethers, window net (unless the seats are full enclosure) and a few other safety items relating to crash protection.....

I cant believe you let your son go out in something so unsafe and structurally compromised.

window nets and some aluminum skin for "doors" is going on soon.
