Default Head stud removal

How do you get the head studs out? Mine wont budge. I want to get them out so i can sand the block and replace them with ARP. Also whats a good one time torque for ARP studs on an MLS head gasket?

You will need some heat. Maybe quite a bit, but nothing to warp the aluminum.

old trick - weld a nut to each stud - put a nice heavy bead of weld - will get the stud very good and hot, to free up thread locker and allow you to back stud out. Let it cool just a few seconds - 15 or so.
Put a socket on nut and breaker bar should - back right out without incident

obviously they are not usable after removal, but will not damage block.

i pulled out a few tiny pieces of thread on one of the hard ones. I screwed another stud back into it and it went smooth. Should i worry about this or is it common? Also one of the holes is lined with rust. What can i use to seperate rust from aluminum?

Follow ARP guidelines, regardless of the gasket.

Recently I removed the original studs from a 968 block with 170k on it. Took two head nuts, tightened them together, and while keeping two wrenches on them holding them tight against each other, applied greater pressure to the bottom nut. They all came right off without much trouble at all. I've read over & over where these are difficult, need heat... but these were relatively easy. May have been easier due to it being on the engine stand.

The exhaust side is easier than the intake side - my experience

+1 on welding nuts to the studs. I used an impact gun to get them off without too much trouble afterwards
