Default 944 turbo S cabriolet

Does anyone drive one of these, or have any impressions of one? I know they were never imported to the US and am thinking about a conversion.

The most amazing car I have ever owned...........the only car I would trade it for would be a 968 turbo cabriolet. Mines a 3.0 16v turbo.

If you've ever driven an 89 951, then you've driven a 951 cabrio...just w/o the cabrio part.

I've had a factory version since 2000 and all I can say is, yes, it really is a very special 944 Turbo.

Never driven or ridden in a conversion before, so I wouldn't know the difference but from some of the convos I see on here, it should be minimal.

However, from owning both factory cabriolet versions, the 944S2 and the 944 Turbo, I would say that the biggest difference is the sheer acceleration and sound of the exhaust and wastegate ringing in the air when you drive the turbo with the top down.

The S2 cab is a great car, but If I had to choose between the two it would definitely be the 944 Turbo cab.

Please keep us posted on what you decide to do.

Um, I thought we were referring to the 944 Turbo Cab here, not the 968 which is less aerodynamic and not turbocharged. The 944 Turbo cab is quite an extreme car. Try driving one before referring to the 968 cabrio driving experience to describe an entirely different car.

I understand what you are saying but unless you are talking extreme driving heavy track use etc. I think the car will be fine. They did make this setup in Europe.

Sorry, I went on a little too much about the 968, I get kinda excited when I talk about my cars(who on this forum doesn't). I'm just saying I think putting out any more power than either of the 16v non turbo motors in a car that rolls and flexes as much as the 944/968 cab would take away from that balance between power and solid handling that these cars are known for.

Just for the record - one shouldn't automatically assume that the 944/968 convertible is inferior to the coupe in cornering/track use.

I remember very well attending a Porsche Club GB event back in -89 or -90 where Jonathan Palmer (F1 pilot at that time) demonstrated the S2 convertible on the track, praising the cornering abilities and the low center of gravity.

More recently, PCGB champion racer and organiser S.Kevlin wrote an article in 911&Porsche world where he recalls having considered racing a S2 convertible in the production championship back in -89. The idea was turned down in the end, NOT because of any chassis issues, but due to slightly more weight and aerodynamic drag.

Personally, I think the S2 or 968 convertible would be better suited for slow cruising around town. But for open backroads and high speed driving, the Turbocab is something else.....

Cheers,
Tommy

This thread is about 944 turbo cabs. If you don't like it or don't give a " " about what is posted, the you're certainly welcome to start your own thread or post somewhere else.

There are plenty of threads about 968 cabs but next to nothing about 944 turbo cabs.

dude, i pulled my posts, i apologized, just f***ing drop it. but no, you don't want to. you have a turbo s cab. good for you. you're going to tell me try driving one first. well i own a 951 turbo s and i own a 968 cab which, minus the drivetrain, is about the same damn car but "less aerodynamic." my 968 cab is no where near as firm in a corner as my 951. i'm putting a good bit more power out of my 951, as i assume anyone doing an engine swap on a cab would do--i mean, who is going to swap a motor and still use a 20 year old turbo and afm--and this power would be useless except in a straight line. i didn't buy either of my porsches to go fast in a straight line, there are plenty of mustang gt's out there for that. i don't think i'm off topic here and i believe rop3 started this thread, so let him decide if this info is useful to him. maybe he wants performance, maybe he wants a car that he can show around and people will say "cool, a turbo cab, haven't seen one of those," maybe he just wants a convertible that he can feel the boost of a turbo in and enjoy driving. it's cool either way, but i'm going to throw my 2 cents in on the performance side. the turbo s cab will not handle like the turbo s coupe.
once again, i'm so happy for you Luis. your turbo cab impresses me so much. everyone take a moment and recognize that Luis de Prat has a Turbo S Cab.

Huh? I wasn't responding to you. Last time I checked there was nothing wrong with staying on topic in a thread.
