Didn't know that. I ordered the 06A905115D COPs. Do you have the PN for the FSI COPs? I have little experience with VAG parts.

06H905115, NGK code is U5015 (I am using NGK ones).

Second, the rubber bellows at the top of the COP are too small in diameter to secure the COP into the spark plug cavity. Scavenging the bellows from a set of 16V plug wires and installing on the COPs cured the issue.
Great idea on the bellows. I'll be doing that.

I am going to experiment with BMW V10 M5 COP's they fit the 968's quite well.

Neat! So how did you do the wiring for that?

Also running LS coils, mine are out of a 2000 Suburban. They're wired as "smart coils" to your ECU (there's no direct way to use a normal DME... you need at least 2 ignition drivers). Mine are wired in wasted spark, so there's a 0-5v low-power trigger to each pair (1 & 4, 2 & 3). There's a shared high-power +12v (relayed) and a thick chassis ground shared by all 4. I elected not to run filter capacitors and haven't had a single issue in almost 1 year.

Just bought the parts I need to go COP on my 951. I'll be using Kawasaki ZX6R coils, which are relatively cheap (I got 4 for $24 shipped!) and are low clearance.

By my eye, they're about the same clearance as these Suzuki coils (which seem to be the only known install of true COP on a 944):

http://www.cannell.co.uk/944%20Turbo%20-%2079.htm

I plan on hacking up a set of stock 944 ignition wires for their boots and slipping them over these coils for a tight fit, or 3D printing a retainer if that ends up not being enough to securely do the job.

What's more is that these can be driven by a QuadSpark: https://www.diyautotune.com/product/...nition-module/

This allows 4 logic level signals from your aftermarket ECU to be amplified into 4 high-power signals, and I chatted with someone who has this exact config and it is confirmed to work. The Suzuki coils in the first link I posted seem to need a CDI box (the DIS-4 thing he has bolted behind the hood latch). but these are ok to run inductively, which means simply hooking them up to IGBT coil drivers like you would for any other "dumb" coil.

As far as tuning, I was able to find this page: https://store.schnitzracing.com/ener...ki-zx6r-04-15/
These are hotter aftermarket coils, but give insight on an appropriate dwell time and spark duration. I'll shoot for 2 ms on these and use the posted spark duration.

I'll post pictures with them mocked up on an NA head/manifold as well as a 951 head/manifold to inspect fitment and clearance and will post pics and results

Why wouldn't you run the directly from the ECU with IGBT's?

I have installed short VAG COP's onto 924 2.0, 944 NA and 928S (2v 4.7) so there has been many more COP installs

Any pics of those installs? All the ones I see are 16v heads normally.

I would do IGBTs but wiring FET logic level drivers to an external igniter leads to less electrical noise and heat in the ECU case. Not really a huge deal. I may do IGBTs, who knows.

Finally found time to test fit my coils. For these to connect, you have to unscrew the tips off the plug terminals (where they snap into the coils). A pair of pliers makes quick work of this. Disregard the nasty cylinder head! Will be sent off soon.

These are Denso coils, you can find them on Haybusas, Kawasakis, etc. I can provide a part # if anyone is interested but they're all over ebay for pretty cheap.

They need a good mount to the plugs, that's the only way they're connected for now. On the left is a boot scavenged from a set of stock 944 ignition wires, on the right is a Denso boot. They both pop off when you pull on them.

Plug #1 has the 944 boot, the #2 plug has the Denso boot. You can see that 944 boot is much more secure, and it is much stiffer/more secure to my hand.

All 4 plugs with the 944 boots. They sit lower than the Denso boots, which is a plus.

That is a long moment arm you have sticking out. I would be worried about vibration.

I agree. They're borderline ok with the scavenged boots, I'm going to run them and report back. I may make a basic bracket to support them. If that's not feasible I'll run LS coils again, or something.
