Technically yes... But... my dead turbo, I killed it more with a shop vac after removing it... so it'll probably need a thrust bearing, at LEAST... I cleaned it for paperweight status with brake cleaner, so it had no oil... then we decided to put the shop vac on "blow" to see what happened when it spooled up as fast as the shop vac could spin it, and throw lit cigarettes into the cold side... at least the light show was impressive.

Having driven Greg's car with the K27/6 (which is rather fast) I'd say the /6 is better for the 2.5L at that HP and boost level. I'd save the /8 for larger displacement and/or the 350whp+ setups. I would also say that the performance of that turbo is great, I would not want much more out of a street car that I expected to be pretty reliable. I'm not sure what Porsche was up to with the /8 on the Turbo S, maybe they needed the exhaust flow due to the limitations of the stock exhaust system or something.

Greg and Joel are dead on, a /8 will be too laggy unless you have a 3L in your future.
Some of that extra lag and be trimmed out through very careful boost control tailoring and interior & exterior thermal coating from the exhaust port through the turbo hot side, once you get that far you might as well consider some head flow work.
next is suspension... then foot print...
Once you get $20k in receipts you'll wake up in a cold sweat one night thinking what the hell am I doing?

Because converting to a K27 costs 1/3 the price of a DBB CHRA Garrett... Don't get me wrong - I will be going to a DBB turbo eventually. The K27 upgrade is probably one of the best bang-for-the-buck upgrades you can do, IMO.

That, and I want to do as little as possible. my goal is set for 300 RWHP... and I stop (I hope). I'm 20 away. and I've decided on a K27/6 for reasons of spoolup. I've found a reasonably priced core... (thanks Josh!) and that's what I'll be converting.
Is this a conversion I can do at home? can I buy a cold side and compressor wheel and go nuts? or is this a professionals only, special tools required thing?

i'm curious how it compares price-wise to a garrett dbb now. $1500 gets you a brand-new no-hassle true d.i.y. bolt-on real-deal garrett dbb these days.
getting a custom turbo matched is not cheap, in which case a kkk may no longer be the best bang-for-buck, especially if you're getting a used turbo with unknown history.
can you really get a k27/8 custom for under $500 ? if you can find such a deal, let me know.
