I've heard good things about these guys:

If you make it faster than mine...I'll punt you off the canyon roads.

I have had my turbo done (twice) by Majestic Turbo. Great Q, quick turn around (2 days)
Typical upgrade cost $695.

the question still remains, as a brand-new turbo in that range still goes for around $800 vs. rebuilding for $700;

I'm revisiting this thread... What would be needed if I had my turbo rebuilt into a K27/8? I understand I'll need another J-boot (possbly N/A?) and and adjustable FPR... I assume my chips from Vittesse for the K26/8 will be no good, so I'll need new ones there.. what else?

Yep, you'll have to modify the J-boot. At one point I had an NA boot (before I went with the MAF) and it would have fit the larger diameter of the K27 but as I recall I was going to have to do some monkeying around to get the necessary ports for all the stuff attached to the J-boot. And yes, your maps will be wrong on the chip so you'd need John to reburn them for you.
All that said, based on the research I was doing before I had my K26/6 converted to the K27/6 (Turbo Performance and no, not a good idea...) the consensus seemed to be that a K27/8 was going to be pretty laggy, made worse of course by being at 5k feet. My K27/6 can hold 16psi to redline and spools up at about 3200rpm, just for comparison. You're more than welcome to drive it anytime. And I have a k26/6 that I inherited that you could use for the conversion if you decide you like it...
