968 turbo engine update pics!
Well I assembled the long block this weekend. I installed the wide fire ring 104 MM head gasket, installed the raceware head studs with teflon thread lube into the block, then torqued the head down. I got my cam tower all resealed and installed it with fresh oil all over the lifters. I was all set to get the belts and rollers all tensioned but came across another snag. My 968 gas filled belt tensioner will not work with the 2.5 cam belt and 2.5 lower timing gear. So I must locate a late 944 spring tensioner? Anyone? So until then I cant go on, Im so close I can taste it too. I have my turbo and a 1,000 new Porsche parts and all my used parts cleaned and ready to go. I got my custom chips back from Danno at GURU and I have my #52 Bosch injectors as well as some #72 Siemens units. Here are a few pics of where I am at. B&B 951 headers, stage III clutch and pressure plate, lightweight flywheel with reference stud installed, rebuilt torque tube, 6 speed transaxle with LSD gone through, 993 TT front brakes installed, Lindsey Super 61 turbo #10 hot side P-trim wet center!

Nice project! Very cool. Are you after quick response over big power?
I talk to Danno every now and then (last week was the last time), he is doing pretty well with his ventures after Guru...

Nice work Shawn. What a shame to get stopped cold by a belt tensioner. You move faster than I do that's for sure, I'm still waiting for parts on my project. Looks like my next run will be in the black car the way things are going here. You might check with BradCam, he has a late car and did a lot a engine work after his rod bearing failure. Keep up the good work and can't wait to see and hear the beast!

Good stuff! Well, the tensioner thing sucks, but good stuff otherwise! Are those gold parts painted or powdercoated?
Do the early style belt tensioners not work with whatever engine combo you're running? I thought that they are more reliable than the self tensioning ones in the later models?

More Pics!
So here is a few shots of the intake runners, I bored them out as far as I could reach inside with my die grinder then matched and polished them to the intake ports on the 2.7 head. I just made some gaskets using the 2.5 as a reference then cutting the openings a little larger. You can buy sheets of gasket material lots of places. So Im sourcing a spring tensioner and I will hopefully be finished by next weekend with the engine!

I didnt touch the cylinder head, I just had the machine shop install brand new 951 exhaust valves and all new 951 springs. Then they just cleaned it up lapped it and did a valve job with new guides and seals.
On a side note I talk to Danno at GURU online every couple weeks. If you send him an e-mail he will usually get back within a week or so. Then he wants you to send him your old GURU chips for any new work that way he knows your serious and again it takes a few weeks but whats the hurry anyway, the cars arent going to start appreciating for another 10 years at least.

Long block together!
So I installed the cam tower, then got to the front belt and realized the gas charged 968 tensioner was no good for me. So I ordered this late 944 spring tensioner up and installed it today. It works great, bolted right up but i did have to remove 2 of the 3 studs that hold it in place as the original 968 ones were longer. So I bought 2 shorter ones and did my timing belt and blance belts then sealed up the timing cover. Im waiting on my turbo and exhaust wrap, then I will install headers, crossover, turbo, wiring harness, idle stabilizer, intake manifold and down pipe! Its getting close to install! I also posted a pic of the 2 different style belt tensioners!
