Looks awesome Andrew. Curious as to the size of your exhaust as I thought it was you saying that there is evidence that over 450whp we should be using 4" or even 5" if my memory serves me correctly??

Its really a matter of back pressure not capability. Of course you can make over 450WHP with a 4' exhaust, I have seen a mate make 750WHP on his straight through 4". At 4" Mr Edgar found 375Kw was acheivable with less that 2psi back pressure. Its really about trying to minimise losses where you can in my opinion. Im running the 3.5" system while NA, and will keep it when turbo charged but run a seperate system for the wastegate... like I did with my 944. I found a 6psi pressure drop in the exhaust when I ran a seperate WG system, from just over 6psi to just under 1psi. Depending on the size I go for the effective size of the total system will be brought up to circa 4.25"-4.5". Im really trying to make 500-600WHP with as little boost as possible Hoping for under a bar, and with the exhaust I have planned I should be able to do that with less than 2psi back pressure in the system post turbo.

So in your opinion a turbo motor running say, 600-700 tq/hp could happily live with a partial 5" exhaust?

What do you mean by partial? A stepped exhaust to 5"? Certainly capable, not sure on the kind of back pressure contaminating the combustion though.

Well I have seen a car with a smaller exhaust make more, so I guess you could say happily live, I havent seen back pressure readings from it though. It really does rob HP from what I have read... Edgar did some testing on this and found even a small amount of back pressure (at least what we might consider small, circa 7% IIRC), had a huge impact on power.

Partial = 3.5" d/pipe into removable Cat then 4" ovalised to back axle, out with 5".
See, I have this friend...

Wrote a book called 20th Century performance. Kinda like Corky Bell but his book is a lot more broad.

well more inportantly he was the editor and writer of Zoom magazine in it's first ten years when it was cool . he did projects like fooling the latteral acceleromers in the R32 gtr for a in cabin ajustable front rear torque split. All his brilliant work can be found at autospeed.com.
he is the greatist automotive journo to ever live I'll try to leave it at that but i can go on if you like.

Sounds like an interesting guy. I get Autospeed so I'll check him out. Didn't know his name.
