Default Help to survive the "Ring"

Any advice for someone about to take their first trip to the Ring in Germany? How does one survive the course in a 951?

Watch videos in a comprable car on youtube, and memorize the turns.

From someone that has driven the 'ring, don't try to be Jackie Stewart on your first lap. Without driving the thing on a routine basis, it's going to be just about impossible for you to learn the course on your first outing. Simulators will help, to a small degree, but there is nothing like being there, on the track, to really know where you are. There are several blind turns that will bite you in the *** if you overcook the entry. Remember you'll pay for any damage to the course if you decide to go landscaping instead of driving. Not to mention the damage to your ride and pride.

Have fun, but be smart!

playing computergames won't do you much good, it's what the english lads in their scoobys do before they go off hard.

just take it easy, enjoy the track and keep your head calm. do -not- try to race anyway as if they are faster, they probably have a lot more experiance than you.

all my "almosts" has been related to either racing someone or trying to pass someone. so that's when it happens.

it's an extremly fast track, and there are some wicked fast cars out there.

enjoy, hope to see you there

I'll probably be down 1-2 times a month in the weekends.

apart from that watch oiltemp and watertemp, and have all fresh brakefluid + oil

If you are serious about learning the track in detail, with excellent instructors and plenty of seat time, one outstanding way to go is through the BMW club. They are aligned with one of the German BMW club chapters that has been doing an annual 3 day private school for years, and have it down to a science. They used to provide you an M3, now you have to rent or otherwise provide your own car. I've attended twice--it's in August--and have driven both the Boxter S and 997S rented through Avis in Frankfurt. The track is fabulous, the setting is beautiful; there's only one of these on the planet. If you elect to drive on "public" days, be careful above all else. Watch your mirrors, and really be ready for any and all types of vehicles and drivers. If you want a link to the school, just PM me. Good Luck.

I've done about 300 laps in my 944 Turbo and another 200 in other cars.

Just take things steady, build up your confidence and slowly increase your speed as your knowledge increases. Get as many laps as you can with other people, most are more than willing to help out. Just make you bring your car home, and don't have an invoice for armco.

I've a few videos on my website that may help.

This past summer I drove the 'Ring in my buddy's '96 Renault Clio...Let me tell you, that was some crazy ****.

55 hp at the crank + one scare fast track + hyabusas and lambos = chance for imminent destruction.

We only got one lap done before the dudes running the track made us pull off b/c we were too slow! But, that was an awesome 30 min (or however long it was)!

My advice mirrors that of davy and anders: take things easy and drive even more defensively than you do on the street! haha. you'll have a ball -- it's impossible not to.

Just had a chance to watch a couple vids, and Yessir it sure does look like you really know the track! Neat videos.

...And that 951 of yours can't be stock...the thing goes like a bat outta hell!

When I recorded those laps I had a slight increse in power, about 280-290 flywheel bhp.

Depending on which video you watched, I had Leda suspension, or a mix of Leda and 968 M030.

Only other mod was PFC97 pads.

well I have a year pass, so i could do more, but gas is like $15 per lap and tires/pads/rotors also gets used.

when we have instruction, a car will use a set of pads a day!

Try PFC 97 - I've been getting around 100 laps to 1 set.
