Default Head gasket And Head Stud issues

Today I visited with my engine builder as I have been out of the country for sometime. I saw a very interesting test been performed. They were using a special film that changes color under different clamping pressures. They were testing Head gasket and Stud sizes on an engine that is been designed to run over 55 PSI boost. I saw first hand how the Stud size,Torque and Gasket design can alter the clamping force exerted on the Gasket. This film is very thin and placed between the gasket and Block, and gasket and head. The parts are bolted together and then disassembled. The film changes different colors based upon the amount of clamping load. They can see where the loads are concentrated and how much is been applied. I asked if this should be done on the 944 Block and head combination. I was told that this indeed was done when the MLS Gasket was designed for the 944 engine application. Very cool. Just passing along what I saw.

The MLS is excellent.
MUCH better than Widefire/O-ring for extreme service.

The Widefire is less finicky.

On MLS gaskets, I had read and also used MLS gaskets in the past without any coating on them. When I received my head back from Jon Milledge last week, I inquired on how to install it and he recommended spraying copper eorosol spray on the outer edges for better sealing but keeping the spray away from the bore openings. I used Permatex for this application. Have not started my car yet so no way to tell how well it works.
I will keep everyone posted.

That is the coating that the newest MLS gaskets use on the gasket itself.

Yes that looks like the same. Not exactly sure, but I'm sure there must be several similar types out there. Very good way to see if everything worked. Simple but effective.

If you are to use a gasket dressing at all, why not use Hylomar instead of copper spray? Its properties seem ideal for the application. Does anyone have any practical experience with this application of Hylomar?
