Crankshaft Lightening
How much is everybody currently taking off their cranks?
What appears to be the ideal weight? Perhaps Chris White or John from Vitesse have some ideas????

Man I saw a beauty on Ebay. It's a lightened and polished crank for the 944 and turbo(the 944 is actually a larger than the crank on a 351 windsor) The guy who does them sells them for under 400.00 and they look sweet. He claims to knock off 3 to 4 pounds which adds according to him 30 HP.

If I had been stateside there are a few guys who do the 3.0 litre cranks regularly. In Uk there is not so many options. Just really trying to find out what is safe to remove before you you lose all inertia.

I got a lightened cross drilled & polished 2.5L crank.
Decided to go with a 3 liter crank.
It costs about $950 excluding shipping to have a crank lightened, drilled, and polished.
Make me an offer.

As with most high performance mods there is not one right answer.
For absolute performance get it lightened a lot – but magnaflux it each season and it race only.
For street use – not much at all, you get enough gain by going to a light flywheel.
Feel free to figure out where you want to be in-between those two extremes!!!
I personally do not like a very light crank for the street – too much of a pain to not stall at every stop light.

It depends on the application, for a performance build yet still a street car, I will not lighten the crank more than 5-7# max.
For a dedicated race car, designed to run high RPM (many other changes), you can take off a bit more weight. Of course, a pure race engine will be inspected often.

Thommo, there is an option with Lindsey to do the full job or a medium lighten. I think as has been stated about 6lbs is good for what we're after.

Cheers guys, seems to fit in with my thoughts. I want to use the car this year on the road then start getting ready for race next year. 6lb seems to be the consensus
