for the record - K&N make very good filters. You are mistaken about allowing more dirt.
I would not run cone filter myslef, but do run a K&N in factory air box configuration. If you maintain them by cleaning and re-oiling on correct interval - they are far superior to non oiled paper element

It's my understanding that the cone filter is definitely more likely to let in dirt or grains / grit than stock. The stock won't breathe quite as efficiently but has a greater surface area. Conversely, if you have a cone filter and have a spin at the track off into the sand this can obviously invite particles into the turbo which we obviously don't want.

I am not real confident in the K&N filter. I put one on a 928 GT. It has a huge airbox, the air flows down thru the filter, and into the air flow sensor. After about 3000 miles I looked under the air filter to find a fine dust collecting in the bottom of the airbox. Again this is the engine side of the filter. With the stock air filter this fine dust did NOT collect.
But I still have a K&N conical filter on my 944 Turbo, go figure.
