Moral of the story is that if you complain about fuel pump noise then I hope you have tidy slippers to drag your old feet around with. Ones that are tall enough to keep your ***** off the cold pavement.

I don't know if he was complaining. I think he was wondering if that noise was expected of a larger fuel pump.

So anyhow, I used a mechanics stethescope tonight and confirmed without doubt that the tap is residing in the hard fuel lines. I'll try isolating them from the body with split hose this weekend and report back. I know you are all on the edge of your seats on this one...

Well, I just spent the last 2 hours trying to isolate and eliminate the noise, to no avail. I put rubber around the fuel lines wherever they touched the body or the hydraulic lines -- from fuel rail to tank. No help at all. #$%*&^%$#!!!

Ok, I've eliminated about 95% of the noise -- probably good enough, you have to try to hear it now. It seems the noise does not come in through any one spot, but is more of a cumulative effect. The body pan seems to act like an amplifier of the pulsing in the lines. So, I got some sound deadening material at pepboys -- kind of a foil-backed tar paper -- and lined the length of the pan above the fuel lines. I also found that the fuel lines were tranferring the tapping action to the hydraulic lines, and that the rear hydrualic distributor (which is bolted metal to metal to the pan) was transferring a lot of sound . I put sound deadner under that as well. So, tomorrow I'll button it back up (may double up on the sound material first), and call it "fixed".
Edit, with the hood shut, it's virtually all gone.
