Default Wastegate Choice?

I belive that my 951 needs an aftermarket wastegate because the factory unit is not able to hold boost, but I'm not sure.

What wastegate do you guys recommend using with the following upgrades?

1987 951
Powerhause Prep. Head
K27-8 Turbo
Autothority Mass Air Flow System w/1.1 bar banjo bolt
Autothority Chips

Possibly upgrading to a full 3" exhaust and doing 2.8 liter engine conversion.

I think it is fair to say that the majority of Rennlisters believe that a Tial wastegate is the way to go. Most folks buy a 38mm Tial from either Speedforce Racing or from MySwiss. Both of these suppliers will provide the necessary adaptors to get it to fit in a 951. The 2.8L conversion might make a larger size more appropriate.

I have a Tial 38 that I bought from MySwiss and am very happy with it. It's a relatively tight fit but with the adaptors it fits fine.

The other choice would be a Lindsey Racing dual port WG, which is based on stock wastegate cores and is converted to dual port. This has the advantage of being a direct bolt in (since it's a stock WG) and there are versions that are legal for Club Racing.

A search for 'Tial' and/or 'Lindsey Racing dual port' will net you hours and hours of reading pleasure.

the 46mm is a better wastegate made with better parts and materials and coatings and such, but the 38mm will work just fine. my 46mm is sitting in my room right now.

Will the 38mm and 46mm both work for my application?

The 46 is alot more money and the 951 cannot flow enough to justify the extra expense. The 46 might be a good idea for a V8 project but is way overkill for the 951. All of Tials wastegates are rebuildable and very reliable. Guys on the board are over 400hp on the 38's.

Considering that it is ~$300 delivered from either MySwiss or SFR, you can't go wrong. The 46 will set you back about $500. That's $200 that can spent somewhere else.

My understanding, if your turbine housing is

#6 use 40mm
#8 use 38mm
#10 use 35mm

So the bigger your exhaust housing, the smaller the WG until a certain point?

the days of 300 shipped for the 38 is gone. SFR told me that prices have since gone up and its 380 shipped. I found a 46mm with one dyno run, it looks brand new, for 400... no brainer to me.

Vic (Pauerman) is selling the 38mm with adaptors for $310 plus shipping. That includes adaptors, allen head bolts drilled for safety wire, safety wire, washers, and gaskets. A very good deal.

Is the 46 a straight bolt in or does one need an adapter for it?
