Default 4 cylinder shoot out

Every year a magazine does a 4 cylinder shoot out. They do a bunch of different tests on different 4 bangers that have been tuned. I think it's Turbo Magazine or one of the other ricer mags. I've been missing it for three years now. Two years ago, there was a 951 in there but it didn't do too well. I would like to put my car in the competition and see how it does. If any of you know which magazine does this and when I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

I wish I remembered, I'd really like to see your car compete. I remember seeing something about this, I think mybe on TV, and if I remember correctly it was all neons, focuses, and cvivcs.

Good idea. It promotes the 951 in general.. And someone might want to buy your car Joe once they see it in a magazine

I know that SportCompact Car Magazine has done the ultimate streetcar shootout annually. not limited to 4cyl, but a great competition nonetheless. I belive Turbo has also done a similar competition.

Be forwarned, 944 owners will have to join the rest of the western hemisphere and drop the clutch hard. 1/4 mile drag racing is one of the catagories of competition....

Then ST should put his in. He can go easy on the clutch and catch up to demolish them later

I don't see any reason why a modded 951 (even just a chipped/basic bolt-ons)
would have any problem competing with those cars. Aside from hard dragstrip launchs, our cars would certainly excell in handling and mid-range speed.

I wouldn’t be so optimistic. All the cars in these competitions are HEAVILY modified. Most of them are respectful even in their stock form. If you want to compete, you better have your car in the same range. A lot of these contests are invitation only. It would take much more than bolt-on and a chip to score high since it’s not only about ¼ mile racing. Car and Driver does this every year and they show this on their TV show. All the entries are impressive in one way or another. It would be nice if someone could make it and do well with a 951.

in the past sport compact car series winners include a ferrari modena 360, a 350z w/ procharger, and multiple turbo toyota mr2's. others interesting contenders include 911's and old datsun 510's w/ sr20det swaps in addition to the obvious 800hp supras. i believe that in the SCC series contenders are chosen based on reader votes and editoral influence.

this is a quote about a past winner:

"After winning Sport Compact Car's inaugural Ultimate Street Car Challenge with his Ferrari 360 Modena two years ago, James Chen of Axis Sport Tuning came back this year to win the Ultimate Street Car Challenge 3 with his bright yellow, ProCharged 350Z. Chen was criticized for spending too much money on his Ferrari in the 2001 challenge, so he set out to prove he could create a winning, lightly-modified, well-balanced car for around $35,000–and he certainly did. Chen’s ProCharged beauty won three tests and placed second in 3 others, earning him enough points to enter the winner's circle one more time."

Here, I still have the Sep 2003 Car and Driver issue. It's called Fourgasm...

The most powerful car was a STI putting out 450bhp and 410lb feet. There was a S2000 with 350 and 210. Those and another STI making similar power were the fastest cars. The best 1/4 mile times were around 13 sec flat.

The S2000 had a 0-100 time of 11.2 sec and a 0-130 time of 117.7 secs. The STIs and Evos had slightly slower times.

Granted, this was back in 2003, but I think a Vitesse Stage 2 or 3 would make enough power to compete. The main problem would be the launching aspect. Most tuned 951s also have upgraded brakes and suspension too.

If the test is a four cylinder shoot-out, then I think the 951 would do pretty good. If it has sixes like turbo Supras, 350Zs, Skylines, or rotary RX7s then they would have the performance edge. Most six cylinder import wars have cars putting well over 500-600 horses to the ground, with real strong drivelines.

I subscribed to EC last year this time for their 951 project, along with the turbo M3. The year is up and I don't think there was a single update for either project. The mag was ok without updates to those two cars, but certainly not worth carrying a subscription. They sold me on cool projects, then stopped delivering.

I used to PM Pablo, who wrote both the M3 and 951 articles, once in a while. I'll have to ask him what the hold up is....

ivai, I think that was it! I need help by any of you guys who find information on when it goes on.
John Vitesse, my car was already in European Car Mag and Pablo Maslumian and Les Bidrawn met me in the desert for the test and article write up. So I know my car looks good enough to be in it. I positvely know it's fast enought to be in it. Before I do I will be getting new mods. Most likely chips or engine management. David likes Motec and just became a Tec 3 distributor. From everyone here you're the guy to go to. Maybe, with everyone's help here, I can catch the competition. Then maybe you can hook me up a small deal on a product or two, and you can come out there with me, promote your stuff, get to know my car and drive it in a few of the courses that you may be better at than me. What do you say? I remember that Car and Driver write up. I would've won hands down with my car the way it is. Does anyone know how loud a B&B exhaust without a cat is? Over 103 db?

Oh, by the way John, you'll have to install and tune for me too as I don't know how. We'd get three runs so we can each take a turn and see how it does. Sound like a plan?
