Has anyone had any engine failures or premature rebuilds due to aftermarket rings? If so, what is the solution. I've been told by a reliable engine builder that the factory rings are a special alloy with a special coating and only available from Porsche.
Any info on this topic would be most appreciated as I am NOT interested in paying what Porsche wants for a set of rings.
Thanks,
db

Your turbo rings are chomoly and are more durable then the cast ones on the 944 and 928 derivations.
I think I paid just over 30 bucks a hole? I can't remember, but try paragon.

I've seen pictures of two failures using Deves rings that essentially tore up the bores. That being said, I just installed a set and will know in the next few months how they last. I believe Pelican sells the deves brand.

I am also interested in what to do about a set of new rings. I just had my cylinders honed (re-finished with alusil). Now I am ready to put it back together but I wasn't sure if there was a difference between Porsche OEM and after market.

Sure did. Love those guys. Helped out a lot finding that stupid Locktite crap that nobody else had too. What was it #504 I think?
The rings that EBS sells, use the stock oiling ring and just use the total seal #1 and #2 rings if I remember correctly.

I bought the 951 rings for my 928, since what we get sucks monkey ***** for boost (where there was none before), and the oil ring is totally different as well. It looks like the ring pack for the 951 has been updated in the last 20 years, and the 944/928 stuff has not. Just my .02(x.928)

oh yeah, the Loctite 574 for the girdle, balance shaft covers, and the oil pump. I wish I had taken some pics of Rhobs engine this afternoon, down to the bare block. The 574 was everywhere from some previous go round. FINALLY got it clean after lots of PB Blaster to soak the crud, Castrol Super Clean to degrease, then Alumi Brite...shines up pretty good.
Bought a set of stock rings for this one from Paragon.
Mike, what sort of finish did the top Total Seal rings have?

The 951 ring set is different than the 944n/a rings, which is likely what your engine builder was referring to. The top of the #1 compression ring is chromed, the number 2 ring is constant thickness (the n/a ring has a step in it), and the oil ring is 2-piece (the n/a ring is 3 parts).
I have been told that using n/a rings in a turbo is a recipe for problems, but others here seem to use n/a rings without problem.
I installed a set of 951 Goetze rings (bought from EBS, but Paragon also carries them now), and they matched the original OEM rings that I removed when rebuilding a 951S engine.
