Long time no update...

The car ran great last autumn but after 200 km's it started to run as like it was something holding it back.
There was no obvious problem or symptom.
Everything was checked. Everything...

Then came a very bad noise... Stopped the engine. Tried to restart it but the starter didn't manage to turn it. It was seized.

Didn't have time to remove the engine until today and this is what I found....

The reference screw on the Spec flywheel was loose!!

It had backed out and made a really deep cut in the bell housing.
Needles to say... the crank turned freely once the bell housing was out of the way

Damn Duke. That sux. Have you heard of the same or similar problems occurring with other SPEC FW's?
Are you also using a Spec clutch and PP?

Did you put the screw in or does Spec? Surely there is reason for a claim on them for the damage if they are responsible.

The screw was put in by Spec. I didn't touch it since I'm running a 60-2 wheel on the front of the crank.
I don't have balance shafts so I'm sure Spec could claim it to be my own fault..

Bad news - I guess multi valve engine project has been postponed lol..
Good news - The engine is out and a perfect opportunity to fix some oil leaks and but it back in again. Timetable for spring is looking good again!

Yeah, a great relief! Mostly because I was starting to doubt my mechanical skills

Hahaha true! Every gram counts
Loctite does not sound like a bad idea once you have set the height.
If you need to adjust it in the future just adjust the speed/reference sensors.

Damn , guess what .. My reference screw as backed out and is probably bended just enough to hit the refrence for timing mark on top of the bell housing .. I heard a weird noise when I stopped it last year , and now when trying to find out where the problem is , i could not turn the engine by hand.

Btw I also have a spec flywheel..

Is there a "fast" way to solve this problem? .. I.e cut or drill a hole in the bell housing to access screw ?

Sorry to hear that. Hmm interesting if you have same problem with your Spec flywheel!?
I would suggest trying to turn it by hand backwards. Perhaps yank it with a breaker bar (backwards). If it comes loose I think the only way of getting to it without removing the bell housing is to remove the reference/speed sensors and get it from there. But that would be a tight fit.

Yes now I should be able to have it ready for the first track day of the season without too much work

Well .. I could turn the engine backwards a bit .. And then I drilled a hole in the bellhosing .. Just enough to accsess the bolt .
It seems like it is the refrence mark in the upper bellhousing that has grinded some on the screw . the threads seemd fine . So i just i just grinded it flat again and used a strong loctite when mounting it again.. Hope this works ..

Yes I have the Sharky tool for the reference sensor..

It was most likely specs fault. I have the same aluminum flywheel and the same set screw issue.

After my rebuild my car had some strange running issues for a while that just kept getting worse untill it wouldnt run at all. After trying literally everything I pulled the reference sensors. Only to find one completely trashed. Rotated teh crank around till i could see the set screw or what was left of it. It had backed out untill it started hitting the ref. sensor and evenyually destroyed the sensor. I pulled the set screw spec put in out and found one of the factory set screws to replace it with. When I put the factory screw it I found it to fit much much tighter than the spec. So not only do they fail at clutches, but apparently flywheels aswell...

Alright... time for an update!

When I already had the engine out I figured that after 200 km's I might a well upgrade

So I started thinking about the 3.0l 16v project I have been planning since long... but I just couldn't see how I could make it happen timewise for this season.

Sooo I took the ferry over to Markus:

..and brought his 495 rwhp turbocharged variocammed 968 engine back to Sweden:

I started planning for some power upgrades but then took the surprisingly mature decision to just adjust some small stuff and then focus on other stuff to get the car ready for the track season in April.

So I switched to my GT3582R with v-band so I can run my new 4" exhaust, switched to my Spec flywheel and lightweight Stage 3 clutch and then put the engine back in:
