Cool Cat delete completed - WOW! Big difference!

Over the past year I have experienced dwindling peak boost levels and an increase in lag. Had a friend's C4 with headers and a cam pull away from me starting at 60mph in 3rd!

Did quite a bit of research here on Rennlist. Eliminated possibility of a vacuum leak and got some advice Doc Wilen (a.k.a. karl2bdc) at Imagine Auto and Scott H. (a.k.a sh944) from KCWS.

We concluded that a 17 year old cat was ready to be put to sleep. I was able to secure the services of a local metalsmith to cut out the cat (turned out to be about 75% clogged ), preserving the original hangers, and weld in a piece of tubing while preserving the geometry so there would be minimal hassels with the install.

The results...

WOW!!! This made a huge difference! Spool up is much quicker and I'm getting about 11.5 psi peak boost! And the sound of the stock cat back with a deleted cat it great. Not too loud and it lowered the pitch so now I have a nice throaty rumble when I open her up. My butt dyno tells me it's about a 40hp gain!

I would have never imagined doing all of this myself if it weren't for Rennlist and guys like Scott and Karl! I also want to thank the guys at Paragon Products for getting me the parts I needed quickly!

I think I'm going for a drive now!

your friend's c4, depending on whether it was an L98 or LT1 car should be putting down about 280/370 rwhp/tq or 310/350 rwhp/tq with LT headers and a cam so I wouldn't be too upset about that

I guess it was the ease with which he did it (he does have the LT1). I figured 60mph in 3rd is our car's sweet spot.

Anyways, I've been bitten by the hp bug now. Got some more go fast goodies on the way. It should be interesting!

It is an amazing difference isn't it. Now change out the wastegate ansd hold on tight. I replaced wg and added a 3 in no cat exhaust. It's a very big difference.

I've been wanting to get rid of the cat for sometime now. I'm sure after 174,000 miles it's a little clogged

I don't really know for sure, but I bet an exhaust shop can do it for you for less than $100

It was the best $35 I ever spent!

Be sure to tell them it is for a track application. I believe there are laws against an exhaust shop installing a deleted cat exhaust in a previously equipted car.

I have a DPWG, mbc and Vitesse chips on order.

I imagine your experience was an exception to the usual life span of a catalytic converter on a 944 turbo. I've seen very minimal gains myself from removing a cat on several 944 turbos, perhaps I had not come across a "bad" one yet. Anyway, you could always replace your cat with a high flow one if you're indeed sure that it is clogged, they're not that expensive.

So what are you going to do to pass emissions???

I've been thinking of going with the fabspeed 3" system with test pipe when I actually buy the car [this week]. Its pretty sweet looking too (not that anyones sees the under side of the car). http://www.fabspeed.com/944t.html

I was looking at my stock exhaust tonight, and I noticed that it too has the flat areas. In fact, the whole pipe from the cat on up is rather crudely bent and formed. Definately no smooth mandrel bending here!
