Default Belt Jobs.....no Whining!

Whining about Belts
Now that I have had the thrill of doing a belt / water pump job on an Audi S4 I will never complain about the 944’s belts ever again - promise!

The attached pictures tell the story – and yes, this is the only way to change the belts on an S4. Not much fun, although the work space is pretty good – no banging you knuckles on this one.

WOW! That is one ugly big job. What is the mileage limit for this job?

I have a 1990 200 turbo and it looks like the same procedure might be necessary. Might all Audi's be this way?

might as well do your cam seals(be careful with the cam gear because they will spin and might damge those little valves), valve cover gasket and your upper oil pan gasket(actually silicone) is leaking. those cars are pretty easy to work on..

have fun

I am facing a belt/seals job on my A4, and I'm not looking forward to it. I'm pretty sure the A4 bumper can be slid out to the "service position" to give you a little more room, but I don't know if the S4 is any different. I'm not sure that pulling the front bumper is totally necessary, but it sure does give you a lot more room to work - but you do have to discharge the A/C!

Are those twin oil coolers?...
Or is that thing a twin turbo with twin intercoolers or something?... Just having a little trouble trying to tell what they are.

What a crazy job. Sure makes the belts on a 951 look easy though. I don't understand why they would engineer it that way. Making the front end 2" longer so you can sneak in there to change the belts couldn't be that hard, or making it slide out 2" or 4" so you can get in there without dropping the whole front end..... Anyhoo, Yikes!!

I was thinking the same thing Zero, I am not at all familiar with the car, but it kinda looks like twin superchargers into twin intercoolers? I am 99% sure I am wrong though.

you can do it without discharging the ac.

1st -the bumper comes off
2nd-unclip the 4 10mm bolts that hold the ac condenser
3rd-swing the whole conderser around towards the passenger side fender, it has flexible hoses that allow you to do it
4th- rip out the whole front end, just like in the s4
theres pretty good write ups in audiworld.com

The same as a 944 belt job! (no real answer but you can't afford to wait and see!)
The car in question has 60k miles on it but a bunch of track miles in the mix. The water pump wobbles about 1/8"....just like a bad 944 pump. It started making 'bad' noises so I forced the wife to drive the 91' S2 cab until I could fix it. Done a 2am this morning...

Nope, to give Audi credit every thing had enough slack so that it could be move to the side with out disconnecting it. The radiator even has a quick release clip for the hose connections.
