I'm not sure that pulling the front bumper is totally necessary, but it sure does give you a lot more room to work - but you do have to discharge the A/C!
The S4 has to have the bumper removed – but it is designed for that and was not bad once you figure it out. 2 bolts and a couple of clips and it comes right off.

Again - no need to discharge the A/C – if you look at the lower left you can see the condenser safely out of the way – and still connected.

I'm a big fan of how those Audis look and have heard of the tight fit of the turbocharging components. That's a 2.7T right Chris? What do you like/dislike about the car? I want on someday.

Chris,
I didn't know you were working on "real" Audis, now. Next time, Kathy should opt for the 4.2, it's got a timing chain.

Only one problem with the car – weight!

It really is a great street drive, I love it for comfort and handling. Sold off a BMW328 sport package car to get it. Great trade up. Really sweet engine / drive train. 85% of full torque by 1700 rpm and a 7400 rpm redline. The all wheel drive come in handy during the winter.

Downside – too heavy to track. I destroyed a set of front Kumhos in two sessions. Over 4000 lbs with me and a passenger. It did manage to pull away from a 930 driven by a friend of mine!! My wife tracks it and it works just fine for her.

I did chip it briefly and that is impressive – but I felt it was putting out enough power to break things so I went back to stock.

The belt was fine - it was the water pump that was dieing!
The 4.2 S4 is a little out of my range for a 'winter' car!! Give it another couple of years...

I've assisted in doing a T-belt on a Passat, A4(along with turbo upgrade), 95 A6, and a 93 S4. The only one the front end doesn't come off in is the A6 becuase there is enough room to work. Looks like i'll be getting rid of my Euro 200TQ before having to do a T-belt on that...

Why do the Audi timing belts last 80-90k per their recommendation, when ours can only go 45k? Are they using unobtainium rubber?

I stand corrected about opening up the A/C. Then again, I don't know a ton about these cars. My A4 is the only experience I have w/them.

Inspired by these photos, I called a local Autohaus today to get a quote on the belts/tensioner and seals. They'll do it all for just under 1K. Seems pretty reasonable. I just wish there was a more technical website for the Audis. Whenever I try to ask a tech question on the existing boards, it gets passed over and lost in the sea of "Pics of my sLaMmEd A4!!" posts. Rennlist...there is no substitute.

Mike M have you looked at audiworld.com? Sometimes, you can find some good info.. But yes it's only sometimes.. If you plan on keeping the car and doing your own work, get the Bentley manual...

Mike S, it is odd that 944 belts have to be changed so much more. The only local Porsche mechanic told me that the belts should be changed every three years.

staying within the realm of Porsche, how difficult is it to change the belts for a moderate mechanic. How long should it take? Any DIY write ups?

Chris, I feel your pain... I did the belts on an Allroad 2.7T last year. Fun, huh?
