Turbo replacement time? What are my options?

Turbo replacement time? What are my options?
So i'm at that point again when my intake manifold looks like a saudi oil derek, and i'm producing a bit of smoke on the exhaust side at the mid-high range. I've seen ads for turbo rebuilds, but i'm wondering what an apropriate price range is. Moreover, since i have 3 cores altogether (the one in the car, and two on the shelf of my garage) would that provide me with a discount at these places? Ideally i'd like to get something other than a k26 so as to provide some more boost, and keep it past 4800rpm instead of falling off like the k26/6 and /7 that i've used. Unfortunately my budget doesn't permit anything drastic as i still have tuition to pay and books to get for next semester.
last but not least, is it possible for a decent DIY mechanic to rebuild his own turbo? I presume that a machine shop is needed as the internal shaft wears, but i have a lingering suspicion that the internal seals would wear a hell of a lot faster than the tempered shaft inside the core.
thanks for any info you guys could provide.

i haven't gotten the whole intake off yet, but by the amount of oil being blown through, i would be pretty sure there is a decent amount of shaft play.
Where would i go for a quality rebuilt k26/8, and would they take my three cores in order to get a discount? i know these things are usually traded in for rebuilds, so i'm trying to get the most bang for my buck & cores

I'm sure if you sold the other 2 cores you could send the other one in and have the job done fairly inexpensively.
as for where to go, apparently NOT to majestic in waco, tx - you can do a search on them

Does anyone know where to find actual specs or compressor maps for K-series turbos? I can't find any on the net. And googling "KKK" brings up some odd websites, especially ones I wouldn't want to view at work.

There are KKK maps on this site but they are in metric, you need to use the calculator to convert units.

How tight are the tolerances on the shaft anyway? Are we talking a tenth (.0001), or just a simple thou (.001)? If there is wear on the shaft, what does the shop do? Grind the shaft, chrome, and then re-grind to spec? I couldn't imagine it being tighter than a tenth.....very few grind machines can even touch that accuracy....especially one found at a mom and pop machine shop....
Sorry for the random questions.....I have no experience with worn out turbos....or the rebuild process. Just curious bcz my family owns a very capable machine shop here in CT. May allow me to buy worn turbos and rebuild them on my own time.....

I would recommend a K26/8 if you're looking for something to hold boost at higher RPMs....and be cheap. But...finding a used K27/6 that can be rebuilt would be a nice turbo too....
