Default Race Turbo

Hi,

After putting down 330 hp and 330 torque at 6000RPM at 17psi with our 2.5 L race engine we've decided to go to a bigger turbo. Currently we are running

GT3071R turbo with T3 hotside, 4" intake
3" downpipe and 3" side exit exhaust
83LB/hr injectors
Electromotive Tec3R ECU
JME race camshaft and valve springs/retainers
Stock intake manifold
Stock headers
pump gas

After discussions it seems the T3 mated to the GT3071R is too restrictive. I have decided to go with an Innovative twin ceramic ball bearing and am consiering a

T04B 60-1 compressor or a T04 E60
T4 0.58 A/R Ptrim or a T4 0.7 A/R O trim turbine

The T04E 60 seems like it won't make the power we are expecting, by 450 hp it is pretty much off the map. Although the 60-1 has slightly less peak efficiency, it seems to work better between 15 and 20 lbs of boost and will support 500hp. We will be developing two maps, one on sunoco 94, and one on motorsports 109. I would like to make 400hp at 15lbs on 94 and closer to 475 on 109. Timing is currently at 20 degrees with the pump gas, and will be advanced with race gas. Air fuel ratios were consistently at 11.7:1 under full load.

Compressor maps for both the 60 and the 60-1 can be found here
http://www.innovativeturbo.com/cgi-b...14109916680555

Please keep in mind this is a race engine, and spool up is required by 4000RPM, lag is not a big concern. The cam is a race cam and is designed to work between 4000 and 7200 RPM. Also this engine will be going dry sump in the next month. Although testing to confirm the T3 is too small would be ideal, the engine is currently torn down and time does not permit backpressure testing. Let me know what you think.

Dude - these are the turbos guys have been using on 951's for YEARS - they don't work. The power they produce is a ****ing joke on a 2.5 turbo car. Laughable. Get a vitesse turbo - then you will make some horsepower.

Tools right. Some of those other turbos had to have custom exhaust systems to work as a Vitesse turbo would, even a Kokeln or LR 75 for that matter. With a Kokeln turbo, Vitesse chips, 104 octane, 3" full exhaust, stock cam/intake/exhaust-xover, we put down 351/347 respectively, our boost gauge was in between 16 and 17 on the runs.

At the start of spool up, I'd have the fuel map a bit lean, say 12.7-13, heat up the gases, then over the next few hundred rpm, down to 11.8-12.1 for good torque through say 4800-5000, then out to 12.3-12.5 for the rest of the rpm. Our first run, produced 337/328 respectively. We talked to John at Vitesse, changed chips, changed the fuel map to above A/F ratios - that's when we got the good run, twice in a row. and tools sig should tell you of the power of Vitesse offerings.

An added benefit of a Vitesse, Inc. turbocharger is that you can 'wow' your friends by calling it a "Stage X" turbo. One must not overlook this.

Yeah OK. But where are the specs for the Vitesse Turbo. Map, inducer/ exducer size (trim) for compressor and turbine, AR's for turbine and compressor?

Andrew, would love to see more pics of your hood vents.

Another vote for Vitesse providing great turbos, they work, and that is more important to me than knowing the exact specs.

Vendors who have spent several $$ on R&D don't give out maps. To add to that, the turbo's that I and a close friend have purchased from Vitesse and LR, have performed exactly as advertised and provided hp/torque to our requested powerband. If you want some serious power out of a 2.5, special tool is the one to talk to, as the biggest turbo isn't going to do you any good if you can't move air into the head, then exhaust to the hot side of the turbo.

The vitesse stage 3 made 361 on the Mustang dyno with the stock head, manifold and intercooler at 18 psi (Bosch 044/ Siemens 72's). This is an honest, no bull**** 18 psi.
That is around 468 crank - conservatively.

This turbo has been made for the 951 - it works well.

just out of curiousity, when (rpm range) does the new vitesse stage 3 turbo reach ~1 bar boost? what about full boost ie 18 psi?
