My understading is Porsche collaborated with VW for the 944 chasis not the motor. The motor was all Porsche.

I think the same with the 914. I know the 914-6 is all Porsche as well.

The 924 engine was derived from an engine fitted to a VW van (don't know which one) but was extensively re-tuned by Porsche so it's a slightly unfair statement when people say it has a van engine. The 924s and 944 lux both carry an engine entirely designed and developed by Porsche. It is essentially one half of the 928's V8 engine. The missconception is an easy mistake and all the Porsche models including the 911 of the 80's for certain and possibly newer models too? (dont know on that one) all take many basic componants from the VW Audi group but hey is this a bad thing?? Look what they've done for the Gallardo?!

Thats a quick insight anyway.

Bear in mind that Ferdinan Porsche designed and built the Volkswagen (translated "People's Car" in German).

The rear diff seals (for axle to diff) are VW/Audi parts, same with the CV's for an 80's VW van i believe. Some non-Bosch eclectronics are also VW/Audi

They are not exactly "one company", more like one group. But each independant, i am not certain of how the "story" goes, but i am sure there are a few rennlisters who know a thing or two on the history

Audi,VW and Porsche, are not the same company. VW was Auto Union back in the 30's. Dr. Ferndinan Porsche Sr., work for Auto Union and then open a counsolting engineering company. They did a lot of work for VW/Auto Union group before the WW two. After the war, Ferry Porsche, Dr. Ferndinan son, founded Porsche AG.This was (I think) In 1946. So you see They are no the same company in any way or form.

Another aspect of the Porsche-Audi connection is that the 944 series was actually manufactured at Audi's facilities (Ingolstadt).

I owned a 1978 VW van back in the early to mid 80's. It had a fuel injected 2L engine most commonly found in the 914. WHen I took it to Vdub mechanics they always said, "Oh, this is the Porsche motor." They charged accordingly.
