Has anyone wrapped the hot side of the turbo as opposed to using a blanket?

A year is about as long as I have run wrapped before replacing, the wrap tends to degrade around that length of time, all is fresh wrapped now as I just installed a new turbo.
And yes... it should help the turbo do it's business

I can't add much more than David about this.. however, I'm convinced it helps spool up. I ran my cheater 26/8 with them unwrapped and wrapped, and with no other changes, it spooled a little quicker and my temps in the engine bay were lower.

Dave: Not always, but they are cheap, they cost $10 for a pack of clamps 9containing 4 or so).
Superloaf: after hard driving, i can literally put my hand on the x-over pipe (from under the car) and feel some slight warmth to it. This shouldn't be done without wraps/coating at all

Don't want to risk losing the brakes.

We used a glass cloth gasket for the gas side of boiler (100 psi) fronts, very similar to hosroms, except ours had an interwoven wire fabric rienforcement. Sounds like a good homework project!

I removed the booster heat shield and the water cooling side of the turbo.
BTW, the NPT fittings, the threads are too tall and they get "cut down" as you turn the fitting into the turbo, feels strange but it works.
