The trim itself just pops off, there are little tabs on it that, if you pry with a small screw driver, you can get to pop off. Make sure you remove the ***** and small arrow pointers first. Then you will see how to remove it. 4 screws. Just take your time not to break anything.

Mine did the same thing with a little flame(86 951)...Don't trash it you can still use all the other parts(or someone can ....but if it is the older type (non Siemens parts) then the control board is probably garbage...the newer type you can probably salvage.
I was told a bad AC clutch/compressor can cause this...though I would have thought that Porsche would have put safeguards in between to prevent an expensive unit like that from going out...and they did so why did it not stop it!!

On removal of the trim:
Take the two vent ***** off carefully, pull straight out gripping top and bottom of each ****.(easy to break supports on back)
Next start on the upper(drivers side) corner and put a small screwdriver in behind and slowly pull outwards, as soon as you can slide the length down and slowly walk it out. You will get the most resistance around the round ***** and secondly the center(white progress bar) Most of the times it cracks below the temperature ****.
Now carefully undo the four screws( when re-attaching don't over torque)
Next pull out the control unit by gripping in the center where the white progress bar is this is the safest point. It can be kind of hard so just wiggle a little up and down and right and left.
Once out a little you can see the three connectors. Use the little screw driver and wedge it between the two on the right and lever them out. The one closest to the drivers side you can do the same thing.
Hope this helps.
