i usually use white shoe-polish...but that looks kind of ghetto. If you do use magnets, be sure your car is clean. if there is dirt/dust on your car while you are at speed on the track, the vibration of the magnet on the paint can really do a number on a dark coloured car.

You may want to get both tape and magnetic numbers. Depending on the width of the magnetic numbers you should put some tape on the leading edge. I have had trouble in the past with my old numbers flying off on the back stretch at Sebring. My new ones aren't as thick, no problems thus far.

The best tape for numbers is Blue Painter's masking tape which can be found at Home Depot or any other paint/home improvement store. It never leaves a sticky residue and is easy to tear. I usually buy the 1" width instead of regular 2" width because it's easier to make numbers with.

EDIT: The blue tape has medium adhesion and 14-day clean removal, whereas regular tan painter's masking tape has medium-high adhesion and leaves a residue when it bakes in the sun.

Shoe polish isn't accepted at any of the clubs I've run with, since it’s hard for the flaggers to pick up the numbers. In my experience the magnetic numbers just don’t stick, even when they are tapped.
Racers tape will leave no residue.

depending on where the flaggers are is also as important as how large the numbers are for visibility. Also, in the events i run, there are max. 2 porsches...so that clears up the confusion, everybody knows who everybody is by name/car. the shoe polish thing is kind of annoying to look at, but it does the job. also, i put rathar large #'s on the hatch glass, so its not too hard to read.
once, i made the mistake of using masking tape...after hearing "oh yeah, it will be fine...it wont hurt your brand new paint job.."....i got it all off..but it will never happen every again!

I use computer cut vinyl numbers and make sure the door is clean and freshly waxed.
Use a liberal spray of water on both the door and adhesive side of the vinyl when applying as it helps positioning, then squeegee out the water and bubbles and let dry.
When you come to remove, grab the boss's hair dryer and heat the vinyl before removing to soften the adhesive.
Don't get keen and try and pull it off before its warm/ hot enough or you an pull the clear coat off but when it right its so effort - it it gets a bit hard, apply a little more heat.
Some people say leaving it in the hot sun for a while is enough but using a hair dryer gives you a bit mor control
