Default Cheap Clutch?

This may have been covered before, a bit of searching didn't uncover it though, so I'm going to ask (perhaps again).
Where is the cheapest place to get a stock clutch for a 944 turbo?
My 87 is in bad need of a new clutch, whenever I get on the boots, it slips badly, and it grabs right at the top, pedal-wise.
While I'm at it, how much power will the stock clutch handle?... My 951 has had some work done to it, and I suspect it is in the 250hp range.

Thanks in advance,
-Chris

Typo, was meant to read stock clutch! There are better clutches around than stock for the money try the paragon sport clutch http://www.paragon-products.com/prod...chkitsport.htm

I want something that won't be too harsh on the street, as it's job is 99% daily driver, 1% track.
However, it needs to stand up to 250ish HP, and I do drive rather spirited sometimes on the street (nothing illegal!).

To me, that looks like a stock disc, without the extra springs, is that correct? If so, perhaps that would be right for me.

I wish they were cheaper though. Seems they're all $200-$600 more than N/A clutches, why is that?

Also, do pressure plates really wear out?

Vertex has the best prices I have found thus far. Stay with the stock pressure plate it is plenty strong. The " stronger" pressure plates will end up giving you too much end play on the crank over time.

Well, Vertex is now the price-winner, however they do not use the cup/hd clutch. Does the elimination of those 6 springs really make a difference? How often do they really fail?

I'm not trying to take the cheap way out, and risk clutch failure down the road, but I don't want to go to a harsher clutch if I don't need to. I want to retain as much streetability as possible, I like to have a really smooth ride on the street.

Have you considered the SPEC stage 1 that lindsey offers? It's another option that should be streetable.

I considered it, but the cost seems a little on the high side. I am not certain if it is justified or not.

According to their page, it will handle the power that my car makes, but I wonder how streetable it is. Does anybody here have one?

Stock clutch will be just fine for 250HP car. Pressure plates do wear out over time.

I never knew that... Changed the clutch in my subaru, and the guy said just change the clutch disc. It only took 1 1/2 hours to pull the engine, so I figured even if he was wrong, it wasn't a big deal.

Does the pressure plate need to be changed every clutch job, or every couple?...

Zero, every "clutch kit" I have ever installed had a new PP. Since this clutch is about the 2nd worst I have ever done I would do it every time. There could be nothing worse than finding out AFTER you had installed that it needed a new PP!

Good point.
For an extra $200 I could save 20 hours of my time, definately worth it.
So now it's a toss up between the lindsey kit, and the stock kit.

Zero, yes the small springs are really that bad! Do a search on the Lindsey Kit, you will find at least 6 complaints of chattering and hard engaging etc... you will get the idea. Why not a basic "cup" setup from paragon?

Here is a link to a summary of the comments about the Lindsey Spec kit

Zero10:

I happen to love the Spec clutches! I've had them in several cars now. I also have two friends, that I drive with all the time, who are making over 400RWHP & TQ too that have the proper Spec Stage Clutch Kit for the power they make. We all went with the Spec Stage 3. And we all love them and find them to be very "streetable". But then again, we don't sit in bumper to bumper traffic all day long. If you do, well then, that could be a pain in the butt. We noticed the feel was a little more firmer, but we actually liked it. Overall, "zero" complaints from me and my two friends.

While I understand you want something "streetable", your primary concern should first be to look at matching a kit to your TQ requirements. What the sense of having a clutch that "may" be easier on your foot, but can potentially slip? Anyway, below is a chart from "Spec itself", which shows you what each kit can handle. That should be your starting point. I hope this hels...

CLUTCH STAGE TORQUE STD/LW PP TORQUE w/ALUM PP

STAGE I 310 ft/lb 370 ft/lb
STAGE II 380 ft/lb 450 ft/lb
STAGE III 6&4 PUCK 500 ft/lb 600 ft/lb
STAGE IV 500 ft/lb 600 ft/lb
STAGE V(DRAG RACE) 650 ft/lb 780 ft/lb

Specs chart is junk as is Lindsey's recommendation of their products to customers. There are NUMEROUS people here that Lindsey talked into far more clutch than they will ever need. Not one or two, not I know a friend of a friend but dozens of people.

If you decide to go with the Spec setup you dont need anything more than a stage one and at that point the Cup clutch is a better alternative.
