Default Turbo Downpipe Aluminum O-ring Removal

I'm getting ready to bolt my turbo downpipe to my newly rebuilt K26/6 turbo. Before I do this, I have a new aluminum o-ring seal that I want to install. How do I get the old o-ring out without damaging the downpipe's mating surface to the turbo?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

A small chisel or an old screwdriver - get it turning then you can usually pry it out.

If you have a torch, heat the ring until it's bright red hot, it'll just pop out.

Yup i just hit it with a chisel a few times, and it will pop out.

I just had to do mine. I hit them with penetrating oil for a couple of days. One came out O.K. with a small punch & hammer. The others I ended up having to cut them out with a dremel cut-off wheel. I cut them enough so that I could actually get underneath them with a screwdriver and pry them out. They were really rusted in there! I made SURE that I didn't cut into the exhaust pipe. I kind of like the torch idea...

I had to do the very same thing for one that was very rusted in place. The ring doesn't rust, but the flange will form enough to create a challenge for you.

If you are careful, you can also poke and awl into it, and pry it out that way.

I did the awl trick too after much fighting with penetrating oil, breaking a small screwdriver tip off, and generally cursing at it a lot.

The awl got it out pretty quick, just be careful as previously mentioned.

Also if it's the one at the catalyst end of the downpipe rather than the turbo end, make sure you're somehow supporting it from under the car. Otherwise it tends to fall down and beat up your exhaust hangers or at the very least it moves enough that pounding an awl in there is harder to reach and less effective.
