Would there be any interest in a rear shelf for our cars? Update.

After parting a few cars I'm almost finished and looking for the next project.
I've been thinking about building a shelf for my rear seat area for a long time, and have a few ideas about doing it. I've seen the factory one, but looks a bit heavy (we want to lose weight by removing the seat) so what do you think about:
Super simple, the key being light, but strong enough to load things on top of it. Probabaly made with a wood or AL frame and either carpeted wood or ABS plastic for the shelf. Maybe a hinged top, or the factory style cubbies in front.
Another thought I had is to make the top hinged, with the ability to lock into the seatback locks for blocking the front area when hauling things in the back.
If there is some interest I'll produce a prototype and maybe a small run.
Any ideas, pictures, or other useful propaganda?

Neat idea. Probably a plywood (1/4" for low weight) base would work well with the carpet applied to it. If you used aluminum trim judiciously you could make a very classy looking addition; probably wouldn't weigh any more than the seats you're removing either.
It'd be nice to find a way to haul my mountain bike around without having to leave it exposed (theft temptation) or with a blanket over it (looks ghetto plus a curiousity theft temptation). Maybe something like that would work if you could make it "enclosable" somehow. . .
