Default at times still get smoke

ok I have been talking with John about this and following his instuctions on getting my piston rings seal. Now I just want to know if anyone else has had this troulble and if it could be anything else but rings. Car is starting to run fine minor things..but for instance I was waiting in a drive through car running perfect at idle and then all of a sudden smoke(oil smell) from the exhaust heavy smoke. I pull ahead to check it out gone I let it idle while I eat nothing comes back. This will happen from time to time. Any ideas???

Where do you smell the 'oil smell' inside the car windows up/down? climate control on off?

This may not be related, but i used to get an oil smell on full boost. Did you double check for any minor leaks ?

Good point Hosrom.. Ian, I think your rings have not seated 100%, you are getiing less smoke now than before so something is "fixing itself" and the only thing that can do this are the rings.. Time for a leakdown test! One thing, are you running a rich mixture at idle?

Many changes have been made to your car, time to start eliminating possible causes.

Guys since we are in the issue of rings getting seated and oil. My friend here is about to recieve his 'newly' rebuilt 944 NA in a couple of days, so how long is the break down period for and what oil should be used?

well i took the plugs out all really good except for #2. Alot of oil deposits backed onto plug!! looked down into the cylinder and saw a little oil sitting there. Now I remember a master mechanic told me once burning oil all the time (smoke) rings. Smoke at idle stopped at lights etc...and goes away once driving valve seals ?

When we rebuilt the track car motor, we used 30wt ND(non detergent) for just under 200 miles, no boost. The compression on the NEW motor when warm was 135-138. When we changed to Castrol 20/50 after getting the 30 wt out, the compression was up to 149-150 on all cylinders with 0-1% leakdown. We ran Castrol 20/50, slowly raised the boost over two weeks, then put it on 15. The car has run 2 DE, now @ 17 psi on 104 race gas, Mobil 1 15/50, 150-149-149-150, less than 1% leakdown. This procedure was recommended by someone I trust and worked well for us; others have said build it and go just use dino oil for break-in and not synthetic.

Ski, He's using 20/50.. Might be a good idea to switch to 30 for a short period. I was hesitant to get him started with 30W as it's cold in Canada..

Do a leakdown test first, then decide..
