Default Does the Clutch Pressure Plate ever Actually go bad?

Just wondering if it's really necessary to change the clutch pressure plate everytime you change the disk. Seems like the part should last forever. Also, anyone have a throwout bearing go bad? I was considering trying to purchase this used clutch for backup. Can anyone tell if it looks good or not?

Um, i replaced my clutch with one that had 2k miles on it, along with the TOB. I got to do the clutch a 2nd time a month later when the TOB failed, so yes, if you are in there, you MUST replace the TOB.

I have seen a PP fail twice, both on VERY high HP cars and in both cases the splines broke off. I would say that under normal circumstances, they would wear out but never "go bad". At some point there would be very little clamping pressure.

My 85 911 had a failed throw out bearing, and it had worn a nice oval in the pressure plate fingers. It happens. Heat cycling will reduce the spring tension over time, so its certainly worth replacing the pressure plate when you do the clutch.

The PP springs weaken over use, as others have stated. TOB, always replace with new.

Have you ever had your clutch out before??? If you haven't yet experienced that particular "pleasure", believe everyone who says you don't want to do it again soon if you don't have to...

Replace EVERYTHING.

Including two items often overlooked and relatively cheap: The clutch fork rod, and the clutch fork itself (check the tips of the ears for wear).

Always buy good quality pressure plate too. On a standard OEM plate there does not seem to be enough clamping force for aggressive take offs. I had mine fitted by Porsche main dealer and after 2 weeks bedding in I decided to give it some "what for" and there was some initial slip. I complained to Porsche and they told me this is normal on these cars, however they told me to go for a Cup Spec clutch at next change. Oh well another 50,000 miles to go!!!!

never took the clutch out, but i'm preparing too sometime soon. i know it's commonly accepted to "just change everything" i just wanted some proof that it's really necessary. it does cost considerably more to replace everything, but i guess it's worth it. thanks for all the info.

Remember ... the clutch is only as good as the weakest part. The componants in our cars have been there for over 15 years.

If you thought the parts are expensive, try paying for the labour and the parts for a second time within a short timeframe. Most wrenches I know will not guarentee thier work if it is only half done.

Yes, PPs do "go bad". The springs get weak, which reduces the clamping force, the surface wears (just like brake rotors), and the release fingers wear at the contact points with the throw-out bearing.

Throw-out bearings have similar wear issues, and like any bearing they do go bad.

Do yourself a favor and buy new parts. Doing a clutch is a major PITA, so you don't want to do it twice.

What about when its sitting on the bench?

Mine was replaced less than 10k ago for a clutch job, but I'm leaning towards replacing it now anyway so there's nothing left to break.

You have already done the hard stuff, out of the car it is easy to replace.

I think your TOB would be ok with less than 10k miles on it, they are about $200, so your call.
